Comments (22)Kelly/Pug: The E.millii in the pic is a hand me down from my mom. I received it about 3 years ago. It was getting too big for her to move it around and too tall for most of her sunny spots in her house. She gave me a cutting which I have grown to about 18 inches and also coaxed it into branching. It is also known as Crown of Thorns or Christ Rose. Some believe this is what could of been used as the "Crown of thorns". This plant is native to Madagascar as was imported to the Middle East a very long time ago. They thrive in Thailand and many hybrids have been developed there. Some of the hybrids have more flower than leaves. The flowers are truly cyanthia and are a little tacky/sticky(I do not know what purpose in nature, maybe help in pollination). I have 19 varieties at this time. The first one is a group photo. Hard to see the details. The other 3 are my newest COT additions. One of the actually has reddish green leaves. And E.millii siegfriedii which is one of my older cot that has leaves which are completely red on the bottom and green on the top of the leave. My large one is most likely a E.millii splendens. Denise from Omaha grows a lot of these as well and I am pretty sure has a blog setup where she mentions these plants. Out of Africa is a good place to find some of the cot varieties. I am currently on the look out for a variegated COT. There is a cultivar named 'Fireworks' which is currently for sale on ebay that I may pick up. I think I will start a mini lemon tree too. When i go south for vacation the end of next month I will be sure to pick up something that I do not see around here often. All this talk is making me want to visit a nursery. Also one of my favorite plants Dorstenia Lavrani. Their is a male and a female form. The female form with age looks similar to a mini grove of palms. This plant is super easy to grow and care for. The flowers look like mini stars that explode to eject their seeds. -David...See MoreJust got a new imperalis and globulosa
Comments (8)/Kids Congratulations - it sounds like you had a wonderful trade. Those are some really good ones. I didn't care for diversifolia at first and acquired it primarily because of its area of origin, but I have to confess it's growing on me. I'm amused by how it looks like a bunch of different plants all at once. Plus, it's tough, so no matter what you do (or don't do) for it, it always looks glossy and brimming with health. /Denise I can't believe nicholsoniae grows so well for you. Either I have a real dud, or it's taking its sweet time getting used to me. Maybe after it grows a few more leaves I'll cut the top off and see if restarting it changes its tune. I'll just keep pointedly leaving my scissors near it in the meantime. . . . My favorite Hoya is megalantha, I'm afraid. I think it's because I was terrified I wouldn't be able to root it and then it always behaved so dociley toward me. Just a really exhuberant grower from day 1. I'm really attached to it. I've also gotten really fond of mitrata, because it seems like I should be killing it, but it likes me. I'm flattered by that and I am determined to get this one to bloom. My favorite group of Hoyas are my rigidas. If I get an opportunity to acquire a new rigida, I always do. I just love them all. In my head, I think of them like our Great Pyrenees farm dog. Big, untrained, and a shade overconfident, but hard not to like because she's so darn striking and self-sufficient....See MoreWhich Hoya Are You?
Comments (6)1. What's a Hoya that you consider a bit of an unsung hero** that everyone should have in their collection? Nummularioides. it is finally making it's way into a lot of hoya collections but doesn't get the praise that I feel it truly deserves. It's a spectacular hoya. It is very easy to care for,it doesn't grow so fast that it'll take over everything in it's path in little to no time as a lot of hoyas tend to do. The foliage is quite nice being about the size of a U.S. nickle and having fuzz all over it. It's a fall blooming hoya and tends to open all of it's flowers at one time. There have been times when my plant had so many flowers open on it that you almost couldn't see the foliage. 2. What's your favorite Hoya you've gotten from a trade (particularly if it's one you didn't specifically start the trade to get)? most of the hoya trades that I have participated in arrived only with what I requested in the shipment. There have been a few times when I would get extras but they always seemed to be things that I already had. I'd have to say that my favorite though would most likely be H. polystachya IML 1410. 3. What's a Hoya that you bought specifically for the flower, but ended up liking particularly for its other qualities? Well that would be hoya lambii of course!!!! The flower is probably my number 1 favorite of all the hoyas that I grow and the fragrance is just as awesome. To my nose they are sweet and spicy at the same time. The scent is a combination of vanilla and spice, maybe cloves or cinnamon,I haven't quite figured that part out yet!! The leaves are also a favorite of mine as there is no other hoya with foliage like that of hoya lambii! 4. What's the weirdest grounds you've ever had for buying a Hoya? I buy a lot of hoyas from a friend in Thailand who goes into the Thai jungle and collects hoyas. I try to buy from him each spring when he has gone into the jungle and found new hoyas. The plant is new and hasn't made it's way around the block yet!!!...See Morewhat is your favorite and was your favorite candy
Comments (9)I guess Godiva Chocolates are my favorite candy for the occasional chocolate fix. Sees Candy has gone way downhill too except for a few classic items. Their stores are full of candy bar type stuff and they got rid of Sugar Sticks!!!. Now, they still make them because they are still put in the boxes for holidays. But you can't buy them alone anymore. You have to buy a box of stuff you don't want to get 2 or 3 of them. I like Russell Stover candy at the drugstore. All my old favorites have been reformulated or changed. UNO bars are no longer much different from a Three Muskateer. Annabel took the middle layer of chocolate out the Rocky Road bar. Hershey's has recently change their chocolate Kiss formula also. Probably think we won't notice by introducing all the silly different varieties but people did. Even Lifesavers messed up their flavors. It will be just like what happened to hamburgers *sigh*. A whole generation of kids grew up on McD's so they think In and Out or Sonic are something special. LOL I still like Swedish Fish. But only the original red ones. The multi-colored ones are just wrong....See More- 8 years ago
