How much are you spending on your master bath remodel?
Comments (19)$25K is the estimate my contractor has given me for a standard master bath remodel. I'm in LA area. I have a five-piece, 10'x14' bathroom. I've not started demo yet. My contractor said that the costs increase by adding luxury items, but that won't change the labor costs as much. For example, plumber's charge for installing a $2000 Kallista tub faucet will be about the same as installing a $300 Price Phister tub faucet. The total estimate for Kallista plumbing fixtures (for shower, tub, and 2 washbasins) came to over $9K. Some luxury items will bump up the labor costs - e.g., replacing my existing inoperable sky light with a remote-controlled, rain-sensor, UV-protected, operable sky light will add labor - and it looks like I will need to replace the sub panel for electrical. A $2K wall-mounted, Toto toilet would be more costly to install than a $700 conventional toilet. Some luxury items are controlled by code. For example, in the shower, I can have water coming out of only one fixture at a time (the carwash shower approach is not an option in an area where water conservation is an issue, unless it's completed after inspection.) No chandelier over the tub unless ceiling is raised to 11'. Steam shower requires ceiling tile; optional, otherwise. A big Jacuzzi tub on a platform with lots of tile work would not be standard. There's also the cost of maintenance to consider. For me, the budget challenge is in deciding which luxury items I really want, since it would be impractical to add them later (floor heating, towel warmer, linear drain, chromotherapy, ceiling tile, electric mirror with inset TV, tub spout in the ceiling). I would need to hire a housekeeper to keep this bathroom looking pristine....See MoreDoing a master bath reno.....sorry it's long
Comments (7)I'm thinking of making up a vinegar solution to spray the tile and glass with every time we shower to see how that works. It will be 3 or 4 weeks before the work begins due to planning and getting started. I'm having it all do and told the guy I don't want to have to do any of the clean up. We just had tile put in and painting do in the main part of the house but we did the base boards and doing the painting and sealing the grout. I got most of the grout done in the past two days just a little more to go. I'm worn out and it's taking a toll on me. I told my DH I'm glad we're getting all this work done before we get in our 60's LOL I know I would not want to nor do I think I could handle all we've gone through in the past few months at that age. DH does not like all the mess and upset that goes with reno's. Being that there is a tub where the new shower is going I would think it is 5' by 3 or so, that's just a guess and they made extend it out some if they can. I'll be glad to say bye bye to the 80's pink and blue wallpaper LOL....See MoreUpdating master bath, how to glam up verde butterfly
Comments (5)The suggestions above seem good to me as I agree that the granite was a beautiful choice, so I say go with it! Just like a black & white bath is classic, there is alot of drama with very dark green stone contrasted with smooth white ceramic. If I had to redo a shower stall, I would seriously think about using a slab of granite on at least one wall. That kind of installation luxuriously shows off the stone as a piece of art, and what could be more subtly glamorous?! It might be worthwhile to go to some warehouses to look at various granite slabs to find one with a big scale pattern that appeals to you & would be compatible with your sink top color and veining. It might not need to be the same exact stone name to work! Stone surfaces are natural products so there is natural variation among them. When we shopped for our kitchen countertop (basically looking at the blue version of what you have, the so-called Volga blue), we visited several slab suppliers' warehouses and were amazed at the difference in stone pattern appearance between one slab and the next. Note the "book matching" of the stone pattern in the first photo. And note in the last photo that the same effect can be achieved to some extent with granite/marble tiles rather than a slab, and might be more economical....See MoreNeed help updating 1960s blue tile in master bath.
Comments (27)We are replacing the tile due to cracking and other issues. Updating both our bathrooms for resale in foreseeable future (empty nesters). Our hallway bath will be black and white basket weave on the floor and white subway in tub area. Very excited about this as our first house in 1988 had the original black and white and we have always loved that look. We had no idea it was "in" until we went tile shopping and of course Pinterest ha . We found these two hex patterns. The one on the left is standard hex. The one on the right is marble ( I assume it's real ??) The second one is clearly a nicer and thicker tile, but what about the marble? Is this the best of both worlds or still not right to go with the blue vintage tile? I am not crazy about the size of the tiles. Would go with penny tile as suggested by CP, but no go for hubby....See Morebossyvossy
