fresh vs dehydrated manure vs composted manure

I want to heat up a compost pile by adding manure. I live in an area where fresh manure is hard to come by. Will bagged dehydrated manure work? How about the composted stuff for $2/bag at Home Depot (though probably not available til spring..)

Squashing some misinformation above... cows in feedlots don't have "large amounts of antibiotics". If you think that, then you don't know what antibiotics are for, or how highly regulated they are. As well, you don't know what antibiotics are if you believe they are "fed to these animals" or if you think antibiotics somehow "help them gain weight on less feed"... I didn't read the rest of what you posted because clearly you speak of things you do not know about.

Thank you to all else for the helpful information, because what I was looking for was about the difference between dried manure and composted, not some hit-piece on feedlots (which I have nothing to do with, but I don't agree with false information being loosely passed around, especially when it makes farmers look bad... because a farmer, I am).

If you'd like a little fact of the day... you will not EVER eat meat or drink milk that is raised in the USA, that has ANY antibiotics in it, organic or not. This is a FACT. These things are the most highly regulated commodities in the United States, and there are withholding periods specifically so that no antibiotic is ever in the product for human consumption. This is dangerous information to spread around. As well, it is a FACT that these things are not just generously pumped into animals... like your dog, when a cow gets sick, it may get treated with an antibiotic (like penicillin, just like what us humans get in the hospital) to make that cow not sick anymore. It is not something that helps them grow, it it not something that is ever used in large amounts or if not needed, and it is not something us humans will EVER consume from food produced in the USA.

Composted manure has already done its composting thing and won't heat up your pile. Composted manure should be put directly into the soil. Fresh manure is the best for that - it has nitrogen and organic matter in forms that have not been aerobically biodegraded yet. Dehydrated manure is a question mark: the term does not explain (to me anyway) whether it's composted or not, just that it's dried out.

Dehydrated manure is that manure that has been run through dryers to remove any water. Dehydrated manure has not been composted and could still contain the disease pathogens that fresh manure often has. Most all dehydrated manure comes from Confined Animal Feed Operations (CAFO's) and most likely contains fairly large amounts of antibiotics that are fed to these animals to help them gain weight on less feed.

Composted manure, if properly composted should have the nutrients that fresh manure had just no longer as readily available. Some of us have used composted manure in our compost piles with good results, not quite as good as fresh manure, however.

Fresh manure should be used with great care due to the potential for disease pathogens in that manure. Fresh manure spread on the garden should be tilled in as soon as possible after application and any application of fresh manure should be timed (90 to 120 days to harvest) so foods grown in that garden will not be exposed to those potential disease pathogens.

Eddie, Enough, already! In SC. the pure sand soil type varies from place to place, yard to yard. Yet, through the years it has sustained the population, fed the Yankee Army as it pillaged and burned and contributed much in the way of research to the horticultural world. Random thoughts on the subject. 1. You seem frantic about pH. As you gain more experience and study other yards and farms noted will be the fact that plants can adapt to a wide range of situations, especially if you select some of the quality types which have been developed by Clemson, UGA, et al, specifically for the south. The best vegetable garden I have seen in the south was on Spring Island, SC. which is a very private plantation. The owner of the garden, while out riding his horse in the depths of the Island discovered the old saw mill and huge mounds of pine sawdust/bark composted over the centuries. He built raised beds and filled them with nothing but this very acid pine compost soil. The results are unbelievable. Brassicas that look like those pictures of crops grown in Alaska. 2. Suggest you not use or compost fresh animal manures in the south. It is loaded with Bahia Grass seed. Once introduced into a garden it will forever be a weeding nightmare. Ditto hairy vetch. Your best cover crop in the veggie garden is the constant use of straw and the Ruth Stout method. Look it up. 3. Nutrients added to sandy soil quickly leach into the underworld. Your job is to figure out how to slow this process down. Forget about tilling. 4. I'm going to cut to the chase here. Place all you reports, studies, questions in the back of a dark drawer for this year. Plant your winter veggie garden using several handfuls of bagged mushroom compost in each planting hole or spread in the bottom of rows plus a handful of dried molasses which will discourage various root insects. Water in as you plant. Now, spread pine needles as a mulch over all. Yes, I know they are acid. Don't worry about it. Press on. On top of the pine straw spread the dark, rich pine bark mulch mixed with any compost on hand. Over this a light scattering of straw. This should be all you need do to grow veggies, repeated annually, building the soil. Amend sandy soils at the surface. Spend your efforts on developing compost, of which 25% pine bark compost should be incorporated. Great stuff! Use it.

What a great question -- you made me look it up. I read somewhere (not sure if true) that mushroom compost is usually basic (and for that reason, not to be used on my blueberries). That would be one difference. Mushroom compost is a by-product of mushroom farming. I think it does not have as much nitrogen as manure compost (since the mushrooms used most of it already) and there's a warning that the salts in pure mushroom compost may burn seedlings. Depending on the supplier, it may also have pesticide residues?! Ok, now I'm wondering WHY I put 2 bags of it on the veggie bed instead of using cheaper chicken manure compost. Phooey! :(

Composted horse manure is also great. Less rich than cow manure, the bigger particles makes a nice addition to clay soil. (Of course, the real reason I prefer it may be that it's less smelly and easier to obtain around here than cow manure.) But I stopped using any kind of manure in my vegetable beds after importing a nasty disease that wiped out all my tomatoes and peppers. So do be careful.

For more heat, add nitrogen ... from any source. There's nothing magical about manure as such.

Coffee grounds, a cup or two of ammonium nitrate fertilizer dissolved in several gallons of water and dumped into the pile, urine-soaked sawdust ... there's a long list of things you can use.

IMO there is no point in adding composted anything to a compost pile - instead add it directly to the soil.

In fact, I won't pay for anything to put into a compost pile. To me that is like burning money.

Instead spend the money on compost <grin>.

Also, the issue is whether or not antibiotics and other common veterinary medicines show up in livestock manures (no one is discussing eating the treated animals!!) and they DO. There are plenty of scientific studies one can research online to confirm this fact. Obviously, these are likely to be more present and in a greater concentration with fresh manures, with levels declining in proportion to time aged or composted.

In the past I raised some cattle that were never given any drugs, nothing at all. The beef I raised was far and above the quality found in Americas supermarkets.

Perhaps the solution for gardeners here is to scout around where they live for manure. Horse manure is available from horse boarders everywhere in the US; even in NY City. I googled that. The barn I get mine from has two horses. They're going to tend to have more concern for their animals than a racetrack or race horse breeders seem to have for their animals.

Generally i would suggest avoiding anything bagged, unless you bag it yourself.

I'm only pointing out a simple point. Antibiotics aren't given to animals unless absolutely necessary no different than you as a human, or your pet dog. You're not going to find "large amounts of antibiotics" in any manure, ever. This holds true whether eating the animals or using their poop for your garden. It's just a simple fact that anyone who's ever raised animals would know.

If antibiotics actually "helped things grow" they'd be a whole different classification.

As for an old post.... things stay alive on the internet forEVER, and people searching for information will continue to see this post, so being careful to speak of the truth is important so that we are actually helping people, not hurting with incorrect information. So hopefully this post can now cease to serve as a scare tactic for those searching it in the future. And clearly not all original posters are dead, but that was sure a morbid way to put things... I'm not trying to offend anyone, just trying to be sure we communicate in truths, since I look to this website for good advice and I think others do too. Happy Gardening Everyone!
