Any tips on putting a TV above a fireplace?
Comments (6)In this project (pictured) we used an electric fireplace, which have different clearance issues compared to a wood or gas fireplace. We ran wires up the wall behind the entire unit (the unit we constructed was done in two pieces, so that the fireplace unit below can be removed if ever the electric fireplace needs servicing) For the tv, you need to allow for a plug behind the television (check the specs of your tv bracket/arm to see where the best place is for the plug) as well as the cable (if applicable) For this project, we also installed the cable box directly to the back of the tv, physically attaching it vertically using Velcro, and then ran a satellite eye from the cable box to peek out over the top edge of the television so the remote signal would reach. We also allowed enough clearance around the tv for heat to escape from the tv, and so that you could grab the edges of the tv and pull it away from the wall (on the arm). If you make the surround too close to the size of the tv screen, you could have issues, especially when the tv breaks and you need to replace it, as tv's vary in size. For the depth of the surround, we made sure the tv when affixed to the wall would be within the "box" of the surround, as opposed to making the surround just a couple inches deep and having the tv stick out further than the surround. Hope this helps you!...See More65 Inch TV above fireplace (brick) or modified into shelves?
Comments (6)modify the built-ins and have the tv installed on the wall. in order to have proper clearance above the fireplace insert, it would mean the tv would be way too high for recommended viewing height. (plus, the tv is too large for that fireplace spot) viewing distance is 8-13' Most people hang their tv's far too high. while seated, 42" from floor to center is optimum height. in order to find out how high you should mount your TV, you need to take the height of your TV (32 inches) and divide it by 2 (which equals 17 inches). Then subtract that from the height of your eye level when sitting down, which is normally 42 inches. So, that means a 65-inch TV should usually be mounted around 25 inches above the floor (to the bottom of the TV). In this case, the top of your TV would be around 59 inches above the floor. Now measure your spot on the fireplace from the floor to where the bottom of the tv would sit. it's a lot higher than 25" or even 42", isn't it? please remove that mantle, regardless of the tv! it's horrible....See MoreTv size above fireplace
Comments (10)I would go smaller. It's going to look off if the TV is larger than the firebox below - too top heavy. Chose your TV size the same way you would if you were putting art up there. And also, be prepared for the cognoscenti here to show up and berate you for putting your tv up there. You will hear it will wreck your neck, your tv will explode from the heat, and people will walk into your house and scream in horror. Yes it doesn't matter that multiple other people here can disprove all of those statements....you will still get sniffed at in derision. :)...See MoreMounting TV above fireplace and concealing wires
Comments (0)I have a den with a wall-to-wall brick surround for a wood-burning fireplace. I am planning to convert it to a gas burning fireplace so it is my hope that if any wiring needs to be run behind the brick and possibly in the chimney there will be no issues after the stainless steel liner is inserted. The den is over a crawl space that adjoins my basement. There is electric, as can be seen in the picture, on the lower left side above the baseboard radiator (circled). I want to get power and obviously coax to the area above the fireplace, concealing the wires. Open to any, and all, serious suggestions....See MoreRelated Professionals
