Toni, thanks! I think it is an Anthurium. It isn't my plant, but one that I have to help someone with. I only have the same photo that you have, and not the plant in the flesh, so I really don't know how big the plant is. I put it over on the Name That Plant forum, and they thought it was Anthurium clarinervium, which is a lot like the crystallinum. She told me it has "thick spaghetti roots", so I think it may be a good size plant. Regardless, I think she needs a faster draining mix for it. When I looked it up the web site said they are epiphytes, so fast draining is what she needs.

thanks for the info. these never get a full head of the tiny flowers. whats in the pic about the most it gets at one time and the stems are always layed over. this is a very shadey area also maybe there trying to reach to he sun? i have taken a few cuttings and will move them to a more sunny area and maybe they will be more upright. also they probably need to be divided. where they come out of the ground it looks like a huge mound at ground level.

jstropic, I learned from ealier posts to force-bloom amaryllis for Xmas, as Jodi said above. To make it easier for you here, I explain what I have done and provide the links for your reference: By end of August-beginning September, I unpotted the plant. Then I cut off all the leaves, washed the soil off the roots but left the roots intact. Next I hung the bulb, now leafless, in the shade for 1 week to dry out a bit before I wrapped it in newspaper and placed it in the vegetable compartment in my fridge for 8 weeks. (I took care not to have apples in the fridge at the same time!) After the 8 weeks in the fridge, I took the bulb out. The roots were mostly dried and brown, especially the smaller roots. I cut off all the dried roots and kept the ones that looked whitish. Then I placed the roots in a glass of water for a day to revitalize them (the Maria soak!), taking care not to let the bulb touch the water. Finally, I planted the bulb in good soil and mist it to keep moisture. After 3 weeks, a scape appeared and then I had flower after week 5 in my humid and hot climate. People said in the US, it should bloom after week 6, which is around Xmas time! See the link below for what I did after the fridge. I'm planning on doing the same thing this year, with more bulbs! What kind of plants do you have, PJ? Are they at the correct depth for that plant? Most of them don't really care all that much, but some do. It is really sad to see your pickerel reed with the leaf rotted off and a brown stump standing there in it's place. LOL Also, if it is a shade plant, it will look dreadful in the sun. I have some water hyacinth in the pond right now that is almost to the 'gotta get it moved' stage, as it looks bad. But I need it for shade and hiding places for my fish, so I alternate it. I have lots more that is real pretty and dark green in a tank in the shade, I just have to move this there, and vise versa. Plus, it could be that my fish eating the roots of the WH are what are making it look bad. You can hear them crunching them! I mostly have the same problem as a couple of others have said. I have to weed them out and thin them. They do like to multiply! Janie
