Family Room Furniture Arrangement help, please?!

Hello all,

I read this discussion board often and I'm hoping that the experts on here can help with our family room arrangement. I thought I would give this a shot and post some pictures before I try this myself for the 100th time!

This is the room where our family spends most of our time. The TV is on the side wall, and the fireplace adds to the challenge for me. (Since a sofa can't go on that wall). I find myself trying to get this settled and cozy for my family as fall is here and we'll be spending more time indoors.

The sofas and cabinet will stay. I have an additional small-framed leather chair with ottoman not pictured that could come back if needed. I'm open to purchasing a larger coffee table, console table, lamps etc. to get this finished. The keyboard can be moved to another room. I am sure replacing the carpet with wood would help, but that's not in the plans at the moment.

The current arrangement pictured was my latest attempt to arrange things around the fireplace. My husband dislikes it, he prefers a sofa against the short wall (which spreads everything out).

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

How much seating do you need on a regular basis? I would be inclined to get a leather couch, that would sit to the left of the fireplace, facing the dining area. Sofa table behind the couch, with lamps. Nesting tables at the fireplace end, to be used as needed. Opposite, on the right side of the fireplace, a pair of chairs that recline. No ottomans, as I see that being an obstacle for your son. The recliners let you put your feet up as desired, but are not in the way the rest of the time. A nice table and lamp between the two chairs. No coffeetable needed. The tv moves to the stairway wall, where the couch is now. Wall mounted or on an entertainment stand. If there is room for the bookcase beside it, fine, but I have a feeling that wonÃ¢ÂÂt work, in part because I believe I see the thermostat there. In that case, you could put another chair against the wall for extra seating. with a wall-mounted swing arm lamp beside it, and a narrow table next to it. I wouldnÃ¢ÂÂt necessarily drywall in the space over the fireplace - it could be a cool display niche, especially if you could add some lighting into the top of it.

i would not place over the fireplace, that is too high. you can put on an arm on the left side of the book case where the slot is for a smaller one or leave on the wall it is on, then i would give it a larger console. i think i would continue to have the sofa face the fireplace then have two swivels on the right side of the couch so they can turn to the fireplace, the tv, or the couch. i would not even ask about shelves i would quickly have them filled. if that step down gives a problem i think the least expensive solution is a slanted piece of wood shoved against it. well and glued down. if you ever want a little more color or zip, let me know can give you at the least some cool pillowsl. let me know.

Can the fish tank sit on top of the record player? Those could go between the windows. Personally, I would have put the TV on the wall right of the FP where you have the whatnot shelves and would have floated the two loves in an "L" out in front of the TV/FP area. The chair and ottoman would go in the recess by the closet for a quiet reading nook. Add a bookcase and lamp to flesh that out. You can still try that arrangement, but there is not much space for seating within easy viewing distance of the TV when it is high, smushed in to the corner and adjacent to the stair area, doors and traffic path. You might seriously want to reconsider the TV placement for optimal use of the space with your current furnishings.

Hi Nita, For a family room with large openings like this, you might want to consider a circular/organic shaped sofa as a center piece and leave the circulation around it . Because linear sofas are difficult to align with the walls, and they would not be as successful in creating a center place where the family can gather together. Hope this helps!

I recently worked with a designer, shopping in High Point & Hickory NC, she recommended using diagonal angles to avoid the "furniture against the walls" look. Example pic below. Good luck.

mdln, can't tell you how much we like the new set-up . I am a very "straight lines" kind of person, and would NEVER have thought of it. Best part is, it requires no new furniture purchases! I can get right to my fall accessorizing! I think it will look even better once we can do wood floors and an area rug. I have a bunch of kids playing in there now, but will take pictures when I can. Thank you again for your input, so glad you shared your designer info. with me!

I like the arrangement you have, but I'd tweak it a bit. I'd put the heavier sofa in the center, so switch the sofas. I'd also pull sofa that has its back to the windows inward a bit so that it isn't up against the wall/windows, and pull the two sofas closer together so that the arms meet pretty close together, if not touching each other Love the round glass table in the sofa joint.
