Ya know, ya'll all say that HTs do not bloom well the first year and that Bare Roots do not do well the first year, but man I have not found that to be true. I mean, my potted roses last year were 5 foot tall (many of them) the first season I had them. This year they are already approaching 4 foot and have been pruned pretty tight in Feb. The bare roots I planted this spring, early on, are ALL covered in blooms. The bands I planted in September are also already huge and covered in blooms.....what am I doing that you arent doing or that defies conventional wisdom? OH and they are all in pots which is also not supposed to work. I would try a few but be prepared to add in annuals if needed. I had blooms in my potted HTs from May when I bought my first roses through January last year and all I did was fertilze with the nursery reccomended fertilizer and keep them sprayed (blackspot is a huge problem here) and watered and deadheaded.

I'm beginning to agree with you guys thinking C might be the graft... basically, I'm seeing the theory of the Dr. Huey being everything that does not come from C. So let's test this out. I dug the rose out and went and transplanted it to one of my houses where work is being down for a couple of weeks. It will be watered daily by the guys so it will do well despite the hot weather. I pruned it all the way down to C. I left B in tact but will go back and cut it off. We'll see how this roles. A question I forgot to address earlier: no, I didn't quite notice different leaves, all I can say is that the lower leaves looked much smaller than the upper ones, I think that it is possible the HT is gone but it was definitely there last year, no doubts on that. true-blue, I already have the rose bug. I grew up on a mansion with over 200 beautiful roses in a much warmer part of the world. No winter protection needed lol. Got me hooked. Alas, I am here now. Ken, I planted all 15 roses in much higher temps last year. They all actually put on a good show last year and are doing well now. You can plant anytime right? Just need to water when hot. Following Jackie's suggestion earlier in this discussion, I contacted an expert rosarian that's local. He suggested indeed to plant HTs deep and still cover them up with lots of dirt and mulch for winter. Sounds good, well, I planted 15 already without doing that. I'm not in the mood to disturb those plants and I did pretty good with 14 out of 15 of the HTs making it. So I just don't know...

Roses are fairly easy to propagate more often than not. There are several ways to vegetatively propagate a rose (so that the resulting plant is identical to the one you started with). If you go out to the general "Rose Forum" page you'll see a link to another rose forum page about "propagation & exchange". If you don't get an answer here about taking rose cuttings I suspect you'll get one there. (I'm not offering advice because I don't have any personal experience with propagating roses, so anything I said would have only come out of textbooks and my memories of studying plant propagation as an undergraduate thirty years ago.) Oh, as to the thornlessness - has your rose bloomed yet? If it did, did it look like "Peace"? I don't know if the plant patent on Peace has expired. I agree it's likely to have done so, but I don't know for certain.

If you cut into it, you may find small white worm-like creatures. From the size of that, you may have a bunch of them. They are called mossy rose galls and are not that common on HTs and are more common in states to the north of you and me. There are some really strange uses of them that have no scientific support at all. I'd suggest removal and destruction as they can spread in a garden and I lost a R. eglanteria because I wanted to see how the rose lived with them (the answer was not well at all).
