Mache/Corn Salad/Lamb's Lettuce/Feldsalat variety?
Comments (2)I believe what you are looking for may be Valerianella locusta. I found this seed at Fedco and here is the description that comes with it: 3102VC Verte de Cambrai Mâche (45 days) Open-pollinated. A small-seeded small-leaved strain that performs especially well in cool or cold conditions and is the best kind for overwintering. May be the same variety Thomas Jefferson grew in 1810 under the name Candia. Underneath is a tab that opens a window which reads: MACHE Valerianella locusta From Susan Lipari of Alpine, NY: "I grew up in Germany, and mâche was a staple winter salad green. My mother always bought it at the farmerÂs market, wrapped in newspaper. Even here, in upstate NY, Zone 5, it is quite untouched by the cold of winter. I harvest mâche all through the winter, sometimes scraping the snow off the rosettes and blowing on my freezing hands. When the weather begins to warm up in the spring, mâche begins to boltÂIn late SeptemberÂthe seeds germinate and begin to grow. By the middle or end of October I can start to harvest the new crop. I dress mâche with garlic vinaigrette and chunks of orange or tangerine. No ThanksgivingÂdinner would be complete in my family without ÂRapunzel salad." Also known as Corn Salad, LambÂs Lettuce, Field Salad and Fetticus, mâche has a unique nutty flavor. http://www.fedcoseeds.com/seeds/SeedsOrderItem.php?id=3102&listname=Mache They also sell: 3114LL Large-Leaf Round Mâche (60 days) Open-pollinated. Vigorous large-leaf type is suitable for sowing in spring for an early summer harvest. Weaver traces this strain back to the 1840s, but for centuries prior to that corn salad was gathered in the wild. I also found it here: http://www.horizonherbs.com/product.asp?specific=1492 I just received my order from Fedco so I suppose I could grow a seed now and take a photo for you. Comments (0)If you are a businessman or entrepreneur keen on taking a dip into cleantech or renewable energy, it might be worth your time to do a month's research into the wode spectrum of opportunities that these fields offer rather than jump into the first opportunity you come across (which almost always will happen to be solar or wind power plants!) Well, I say this because most people immediately think of solar energy when they think of renewable energy businesses. But solar may or may not be the best option for you. As this post on renewable energy business opportunities says: " Is solar PV the best business opportunity for you? The short answer is: It depends on who you are/what your business is, and what you want to be. The detailed answer follows. First, it is easy to determine if solar PV is NOT for you. Solar PV is NOT for you if: * You do not have access to considerable capital (i.e. in excess of 20 crores), AND/OR * You do not wish to operate in a long-term, fixed-return industry. Similarly, it is also easy to determine if solar PV IS for you if all the following criteria are fulfilled: * You are keen on entering the power industry, AND * Your company DNA is compatible with operating in a utility service industry such as power, AND * If your group has access to (significant amount of) cheap capital, AND * If your business group has a background that increases your chances of getting a license for solar PV under the NVVN scheme So, if you fall into one of the two above, the answer is fairly simple. " In most countries, solar power is indeed synonymous with feed in tariffs and long power purchase agreements, not exactly the kind of stuff you would love if you were an innovator. But the author of the post quoted above possibly should qualify his words in that these are applicable only for solar PV power plants...there are a number of other opportunities along the solar PV value chain that can do with a significant amount of innovation - right from polysilicon making to making wafers to making high-efficiency solar cells. Anyway, the point indeed is that renewable energy is not just solar energy and there's heck a lot of other opportunities around - in manufacturing, in trading and in services, and for small businesses to huge conglomerates. What is your take on the range of renewable energy opportunities? Are there any niche/unique opportunities that you are aware of/have come across? Comments (20)I agree, that is a lovely mixer. I love the glass bowl and now I am going to have to see if they make one that fits my current mixer. I also hope to one day get a copper bowl for the mixer for egg whites. If I knew someone that would love to have a stand mixer and could not afford the expense, I would probably pass the old one on. My criteria would be somebody who I already knew liked to bake, not just somebody who thinks that maybe someday... It is hard for me to justify holding on to something and taking up storage for something that somebody else could put to use. Dcarch, thank you for the information about having the mixers greased. I really should have that done. The seal dry rotted on my first mixer and all the grease/oil came out. In retrospect, it was not a large surprise as I lived near Palm Springs, CA at the time where the climate is very dry and quite warm. We were having a difficult time trying to find a repair place so KitchenAid did a one time replacement, free of charge. That mixer was passed on to a friend who bakes when DH found a more powerful one with a larger capacity for a great deal....See Moremaddielee
