Roots! Roots! Roots everywhere! When do i transplant my Pachyclada

My Pachyclada has been rooting for exactly 1 month now and it has TONS of roots. Do i need to put it in a bigger container now or should i wait until next spring and just let it completely fill this small solo cup?

I would leave it in until Spring. Does it have drainage? Don't over pot.

As long as it has drainage, you can leave it in there awhile longer so the roots "toughen up" a bit. Personally, in another month or so, I would probably move it to a square 4" pot for stability. Pachyclada is a heavy-leaved species and it will probably topple easy in the solo cup. Make sure your mix is nice and loose and be careful not to overwater over winter. And disturb those new roots as little as possible when transferring to a new pot.

Soil applyed nitrogen units for zone 8 is 125 units to max out production because of 34 percent nitrogen I used 68 units twice on grown plants first 68 units at 5 percent bloosom and then 14 day before end harvest. July first for last 68 units. In september and october you can have as much growth as all rest seasons plants double in september october in zone 8. I cut of any broken root bits, but usualy keep all the root as intact as possible. My experience has been the only real advantage of pruning roots is to prevent them from getting bend every which way if the pot or planting hole is to small. I just get a large enough pot or dig a bit deeper or winder. Roots happily spread downwards and horisontally, but doesn't like being bent upwards. Keep bareroots moist and it helps to protected against direct sunlight for a while, until they get leafed out.

I have the same issue with my vegetable garden, on one side I have an enormous lilac bush 15 feet away from the bed, on the other side fruit trees 15 feet away from a bed. When I planted them 17 years ago, they were twigs, and 15 feet looked like plenty of distance. Now, not so much. When you add all those good soil amendments, the invasive roots just love it and grow back pretty quickly. I use a pick to tear them up, going down 6 inches or so, then I don't bother to remove the small root bits, just plant in amongst them. What I've found is that the invasive roots suck up the moisture very quickly - IOW there are plenty of nutrients, the veggies I plant will grow just fine if I water them more frequently, like every 2 -3 days, instead of once a week that works for the rest of the garden.

Sat. October 16: ((Thanks for all of your fast responses. I'll hold off on the root pruning and wait another week to make a decision. I'd like to have more camelias, so I've made a cold box(?) to grow root cuttings. I'll look into and try the root transplanting as well.)) Monday October, 25: The Camelia is 6 inches from the house and directly under the eaves; it overhangs the front steps and walk. I can't see any other option than to move it. When I bought the house it looked as though it had never been pruned. A landscapte architect thought it was unusually lage for this area. It obscured the front door from the street and the view out through the door and was a security issue. I trimmed off what was touching the eaves, limbed up the foremost group of branches and hard pruned the branches (there are 12 total) nearest the house to gradually have a thick bush 5 feet high. It didn't seem to be the right decision. What I've decided to do is split the roots and move the large foremost "limbed up" portion 4 feet from the eaves and 3 feet from the steps; I'll concentrate all my effort on making this portion survive. The rest I'll split and transplant as best I can. I have some experience transplanting and so far I've had only one failure out of 15 attempts. I went ahead and root pruned it. I'll try splitting and transplanting after the first frost. Thanks again for your input. I've been agonizing over this and gathering information for two years.

See, my problem with a "loose" mix is that i feel it needs more attention. Where a heavier mix can be aloud to dry out. I worry about having to constantly water when they are outside in spring and summer and it is very hot. The mix it is in now is about 1 part perlite to 3 parts miracle grow.

The pachyclada i got from gardinos is in a loose mix and it also has clay balls.

I will probably keep that one inside at all times.

I just have to be careful in the winter timewith watering in a heavier mix.

And it is definitely top heavy for that small solo cup.

I decided to let it stay in this solo cup till spring but i cannot believe how many roots this thing has got in less that 6 weeks! I have never been successful with cuttings so it is a nice surprise.

Maybe it is because of the root tone hormone or maybe woody cuttings send out growth like this?

Some of the roots are even growing upwards and touching the top of the soil. lol

I can only see 1 tiny root on my pottsii cutting and that was a woody cutting also.
