My Little Gem watermelon seeded Mem Day never germinated so in mid-June I seeded more knowing it was a long shot. They finally started growing and just recently started flowering but no fruit at all - not even pea-sized. I think it was just too cool this summer. (Edit - I did find a marble-sized watermelon today) My cantaloupe seeded Mem Day now has 2 melons on it, 1 almost ripe and the other seeded mid-June has a small green melon on it that I hope will have time to ripen before frost. It's been a bad summer for everything - I had some decent zucchini but (edit) NOT nearly as many as I should have, didn't keep up with SVB and now it's getting PM so time to pull them. I started a 2nd planting a month ago and hope to harvest off those into Oct since they're in a tunnel (and I just ordered plastic today). Probably. I've never found the tendril thing very reliable, and frankly, I've never been good at judging when a watermelon is ripe. I've picked way more than my fair share of them far too early, and a few too late. I wish they came with a built-in glass viewport or some device that was the equivalent of the pop-up turkey timer.

I've eaten plenty of rind...didn't work for me. That web site I referred to above for the Golden Midget has probably the best melon, squash and pumpkin list I've seen. I go mad on that site - have plastic, will spend. I not only want to try them all, I intend doing so!!! Pepino, how about asking your rellies to send over some seeds? It's perfectly legal to import melon seeds into Australia. They just have to be clean and dry! Oh, and you have to write the botanical name on the customs sticker, or at least on the envelope. If quarantine can't identify them, they don't get through!
