Comments (23)"The reason to remove the soil was so that the drainage and moisture retention would be consistant throughout the medium. The concern was that a mass of dense potting soil would not get wet enough (or would possibly stay too wet), as the water rushed through the faster draining CHCs or bark mix surrounding the old root ball/soil mass. But, with all the repotting I've done, I've seen that the roots naturally reach out, grow through and surround all the CHCs/bark with astounding speed. So the possible watering problem (by not removing old soil) has *not* manifested itself. The plant fills the new pot rapidly with healthy roots and gets nourishment and moisture easily. " Lisa: we are in sync of the reasoning why I have not done so removing the soil of the old pot. I believe that the citrus roots will seek out the moisture/water for survival so if the water is in the new sorrounding CHC mixture the plant will send out new roots to seek where the water is in a hurry. So in no time you have a tremendous new roots going everywhere for water search. I believe the plant can sense where the water is. A case in point- roots imbedded in the sewer joints inside the pipe. Also I've seen roots that travel 5 to 8 times its height....See MoreFoxtail, Royal, or Christmas Palm
Comments (29)I wouldnt recommend plastic unless you can assure its 100% dry. to much moisture in the crown will cause fungus and rot. once it gets to big for that your going to have to make a little box greenhouse around it for the winter. unless you go with a meedle or a windmill or somthing it will have to have some protection at some point..unless global warming takes over...See MoreChristmas Palm In the GTA
Comments (14)I have definitely noticed that when Christmas palms are available around here, they are really big (not sure why). I purchased a planting of three smaller ones on ebay (doing well at about 3 feet or so). A second larger planting (at 4.5 feet), I found standing amid a HD forest of Majesty palms--I grabbed it! HD being what it is, I was advised by the checkout clerk NOT to buy it because the tips were shedded off. Apparently thinking that this normal feature of the plant was the work of pair of scissors--I just smiled and said thank you. P.S.: In the past I have really had trouble overwintering this particular species. Taking the advice of a board poster, I planted mine in a very sandy soil (excellent drainage) and I watch never to really let them dry out. (These can start browning quickly without giving too many signs of drought.)--So far they are doing great and growing actively!...See MoreAddonnia merelli..christmas palm
Comments (16)By far, and I mean by far, the best performing palms I had over Winter. Every last one I have put on at least two new leafs from October to March and all have high expectations for this Spring. Also, I am with Orchiddude, I NEVER mist my palms even thou I am in a 5 and have everything inside in the dry furnace house. I have found at least for me, that the risk of loseing a palm to dry air far exceeds the likelyhood that a palm dies from misting waters getting into the spear. At least thats what happens in my house. Everybody is different thou....See Moreescolat
