Comments (61)This is a very old post but I want to correct the misinformation in the last post. Spring flowering bulbs will, and need to, start rooting as soon as you plant them. It makes no sense to say that they don't grow roots until February. Some will already be flowering by then. You plant them in the Autumn because there is still residual warmth in the ground which gets them started. If that were not the case you'd be planting them in the Spring. They cannot 'winter over the first year' if they don't have roots. They'd just rot. If you dig up a well established daffodil in September you'll see that it is already growing roots. 4 of Bud's plants were spring bloomers, one was a summer bloomer and one wasn't a bulb at all. It's also not true that 'everyone needs to dig up and divide at least every 3 years.' You can divide them if they need it. But it is not a hard and fast rule....See MoreShow Off Your Breck's Roses
Comments (65)Those are all very lovely. Out of my nineteen I bought six of them are dying and I will have empty pots when I pull them out. A plant nursery in town is putting their own root roses on sale tomorrow for $15 each so since I have 6 empty pots you know I must go check it out. I really wanted Grand Dame and Bella Roma and those are the two that are dying. They have both of those in stock so I must go get them don't you think?...See MoreRoses 2016
Comments (23)I saw Above and Beyond today in a nursery, has anyone else given it a try? I am tempted... Other good news, my Prairie Peace is definitely alive and showing budding. Even after a late planting last fall and almost no roots, it still made it! I now have: Prairie Peace Michel Trudeau Frontenac Blanc de Double Coubert Sir Thomas Lipton x 2 Marie Bugnet Therese Bugnet x 2 Winnipeg Parks x 6 Purple Pavement Turbo Wasagaming John Cabot Snow Pavement Quadra Hansaland The Hunter Champlain Prairie Joy Morden Centennial Bill Reid Rugelda Morden Sunrise Cuthbert Grant Emily Carr x 2 Red Leaf Rose Polareis aka Polar Ice These were all planted in the last two years. Very little winter kill overall this year. Branches that did die were ones that shot up late last year. I am looking forward to observing their performance and I can't wait for the blooms!...See MoreBrecks
Comments (22)Brecks was great for me as well. I got 3 of the grab bag offers in the end. I got 5 roses for $19.95 and did that 2x then the price dropped again and I got 5 more for $9.99. All 15 roses arrived in good condition, particularly considering they were end of season sales and were in storage for longer than usual. I did have 2 that did not break dormancy (those were ones I ordered separately. Julia Child and Sheila's Perfume) and they gave me a credit for this year. Out of all the ones I got from them 5 didn't make it through the summer (non uncommon in my neck of the woods). I didn't bother asking for a credit as I got them so ridiculously cheap. This year, if they have that sale again, I will be ordering more :) It was great fun waiting to see what you got in the grab bag and all the roses they sent were of good quality. Also, customer service was great. I ordered from Michigan Bulb this year as well. I had no idea they had a bad reputation. I ordered two butterfly bushes and got a coupon for free shipping and a free bag of bulbs (picotee begonias). They did take a while to arrive, but it was clearly written on their site that they would not ship until the end of February for my zone. Everything arrived in good condition and I paid half of what they cost on other sites (kaleidoscope butterfly bush and Black Knight, each was $8 or so) and much less expensive than my local nursery who had Black Knight for $20. Overall my experience was good. Maybe I just got lucky. :)...See Morecountrygirlsc, Upstate SC
