Best pot size for overwintering?

I bought "HabaNada" seedlings last spring - they were shipped way late in the year by the grower, so missed the best of the chili growing season for NM. They are healthy, just small and barely starting to set fruit when the rest of the state is already harvesting.

What's the best size pot to overwinter them in so I can give them a proper start next year?

guess that depends how much room you have indoors for it. the smaller the pot the slower the plant grows. so if you want it to stay small stick it in a pot an inch or two at most bigger than it's current pot. if you have the room and the light then biggest pot that will fit in the grow area.

Saw this thread and couldn't not respond. I actually had four different mums in four different terra cotta pots outside last Fall By the time I moved them to the garage the soil was frozen and I couldn't for the life of me dump them in the garbage without breaking my pots so I thought, oh I'll just shove them in a corner of my unheated garage and throw them out when they thaw. Well, I went to do that yesterday. All four were brown and cripsy/dead/crunchy. Well as I was dumping two of them I noticed the smaller two had new green growth at the base of all the dead stuff. So I just cut off all the crispy stuff and just left the green stuff in tact. I have no idea what kind they are (the cheap ones they sell at the nursery in the fall) they are white in color and I did not water them AT ALL over the winter. Put them in froze and let them be. Now I assume these will not look as good as last year UNLESS I really keep up on pruning them. So it can be done! Just thought I would add to this post Thanks Curtis

I overwinter hydrangeas in large pots on the sidewalk in front of my house. The first, big one immediately below will need to be divided or planted in the ground in a year or so, when it outgrows the pot. The small hydrangea in the bottom photo probably has a good three or four years before it outgrows its container.

I think it depends on the plant. Like fo tomatoes and peppers, I start in 1" Square cells. I pot up from there. For squash and beans, I use 3" pots to start with. I use a lot of red solo cups too.

lazy_gardens I overwinter several peppers. Two are three years old and I am in the northeast, east end of Long Island. The pot size is not really that important to 'keep' the plant. I start seeding some of the super hots in September/October and they are in smallish size pots, one gallon size. O have a jalapeno that is three years old and it is in a bucket the size of a half barrel. They will be pot bound if in too small of a container, but really depends on what you are trying to do with them. If you want them to grow, use a bigger pot. At least that is how my experience has been with them.

They are free-range now. I'll dig them up and stick them into a 2 or 3-gallon nursery pot. We have a lovely sun porch and a well-lit workshop that doesn't freeze. I just need them to make it through the winter so I can plant them out again.

I've root-pruned 2 of them.
