What a great thread!! I have learned so much just from this thread alone in my research to plan Ficus Nitida in our backyard. Like everybody here we're concerned about the aggressive roots and I feel that if I combine consistent trimming, a deep root watering system with 24"x24" root guard barriers I should be able to mitigate the issues and ensure I don't have root problems in the future. I'm wondering if anybody has taken this approach. We're planning on planting them along the perimeter of our backyard which have masonry/cinder block walls separating the neighbors. They'll also be close to our pool. Pictures are attached. I'm looking at these products to accomplish this. Please let me know what your thoughts are. Ummmmmmm. . . of course carnivorous plants have roots! Mine all do! And they don't decline and die if you plant them in regular potting soil. The main thing is that they stay moist. Besides, even if that were the case, other plants adapt very well to growing in sphag. or the usual 50/50 mix of perlite and peat for CPs. I prefer sphag. to grow mine in, and I have also successfully grown wandering jew, ferns, broms, orchids, and english ivy in sphag. And those are only the plants I've tried in sphag. I'm sure many other plants would also enjoy it. Ficus certainly would, and broms would also appreciate the openness that sphag. provides. Of course any CPs you put in your tank should be tropical, but there is no reason that they wouldn't be able to share that environment with a ficus vine and some broms. You could always have a flatter, boggy section for the CPs, and a higher section (best towards the back) for the broms. Or just grow the broms epiphytically on pieces of wood.

Our conversations center primarily on soils and bonsai back and forth stuff, but she knows I have an interest in Ficus that goes beyond bonsai & thought I'd be interested. Because of the remarkable increase in popularity of F lyrata over the last 5 years or so, I figured some you would be interested as well. Hi everyone, I’m located in New York City and I’m looking for a cutting from Ficus Audrey aka Banyan Tree (Ficus benghalensis ‘Audrey’). In return, I can offer a 2" Pilea peperomioides (aka Friendship plant aka Chinese Money Plant) baby (see picture) they grow fast. I suppose that's the most desirable plant I have, although also have two potted cuttings from my Jade plant (Crassula ovata) one 2.5" already well rooted and is 4" slightly behind in the rooting process (2 weeks). Alternatively could do a fresh cutting from any of the following plants: Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica) Fiddle Leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata) Swiss Cheese Plant (Monstera deliciosa) Swiss Cheese Vine (Monstera Adansonii) Fabian Aralia Stump (Polyscias scutellaria) Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata)
