Your top 5 favorite places to visit for the roses
Comments (17)My favorite 5 1.'The Florentine' which is the Old Rose garden at Morcom Amphiteatre of Roses' on the corner of Olive Street and Oakland Ave. in Oakland, California. Walk down the long staircase and look at the dates of introduction on the signs, inside the oval stone-walled area. If the dates are between 1804 through the late 1900's you're in the right place.. I love this park because in summer I enjoy walking on the outer paths where it is green and leafy with a few acres of tall trees..In early spring the Banksiae are in bloom among the trees, and also the wild roses we got from Miriam Wilkins estate. There is a gigantic rose that has been there for more than a decade, that I think must be R. brunonii and a couple R. moschata planted by the Noisettes. There are c. 2 dozen different cultivars of Pernetiana roses, and Tea and Chinas. a huge Catos Cluster' which on Manettii has grown to be more than 18 feet tall. It's a great place to ramble.. There are two modern rose gardens, too and a reflecting pool. Because by city law, the roses cannot be sprayed with anything, I go there to get cuttings from some of the healthier roses for our area... with my permission slip on hand. 2. Vintage gardens home garden. My idea of heaven, especially the south side of the house garden where two 25'+ tall 'Long John Silver' rosebushes bloom showing huge silvery white powder puff like roses, past those are many of the once blooming roses including 'The Garland' which are planted in a lush grassy area planted with other bushes, purple clematis, foxglove, increasing the beauty to a crescendo. 3. San Jose Heritage Rose garden. I do wish it had a shaded area with seats, and a drinking fountain and closer bathroom facilities for the aged, and the infirm. I've gotten heat exhaustion there more than once. 4.Lovely Luanne has a beautiful rose garden. Her yearly "whiffing event" is coming up soon. We've been neighbors for several years, in Oakland, and now in Richmond, California.. It takes a beautiful heart to grow beautiful roses...which she does.. 5. The Berkeley Botanical Garden' in California. I love their R. odorata and apothecary roses, and R. arvensis all planted near the Chinese Medicinal garden where R. rugosa and R. chinensis spontaneaa (sp?) are growing. Their R. odorata is covered with hundreds of large saucer like golden-yellow blossoms and blooms between March and April depending on how warm or cold its' been. It was more than 30 feet tall the last time I ooohed and ahhheed over it. I've been a tiny bit miffed at the folks who run that garden for their planting vivid red Florabundas ("for color") in their Old Rose Garden as I think it misleads the public. Theres' not a single Gallica in the Old Rose Garden and many of them, with the Hybrid Chinas would bloom well up on the hills where at least some frost and winter chill comes in winter. Comments (18)I loved Chanticleer in PA. Longwood is spectacular at Christmas (or any time of year for that matter) The gardens at Burpee in PA were very nice too. Ghoghunter, now I'm bummed my mom and I didn't have time to venture across to NJ to see Bowman's Hill. We also didn't have time to get to Morris Arboretum. Next time! Ladew Topiary Gardens in MD was quite a treat as I thought I might get "bored" with just topiaries but it was so much more than that and the topiaries were unbelievable! I never thought I would see a full-size fox-hunt made out of topiary, including horses and riders, fence and fox! Spectacular. They also had a tall, long yew hedge and there were topiary swans all along the top of the undulating hedge. Brooklyn Botanic garden and the NY Botanical Garden (were lucky a Chihuly display was there when we visited) are both well worth checking out. As well as the Central Park Conservatory Garden. Cameron, I still need to get to Juniper Level Gardens. There never seems to be an open house when I'm down in NC, and when we had made an appointment one in our party got very sick so we had to cancel the trip. I'm going to have to check out Airlie and Horton. I agree with Juneroses that the Norfolk Botanical Garden is very nice. In winter they have a spectacular christmas light display that you drive through. Annette, someday I am definitely going to make it out your way to visit Butchart and other gardens that you've mentioned. That is a trip that is absolutely on my list so thanks for adding more gardens to this post. Also in Charleston, SC is Magnolia Plantation and gardens. It is so interesting because they have a lot of information about the slaves who worked there and many original documents. It was a lovely garden with a lot of history. I couldn't believe how HUGE the camelias were at Middleton Place! They were like big trees! And if you ever plan to go to Charleston, check with the chamber of commerce to find out when the private garden tours are. That was really nice. Fun ghost tours there too! In England, Sissinghurst is really incredible and I also really liked the gardens at Hever Castle. Well actually I think I liked every garden I saw in England. I was surprised as to how many parks/gardens were scattered througout Paris and they were all so beautiful and well kept. Listing out some of these gardens I've visited makes me realize how extremely pathetic I am that I have never visited the Arnold Arboretum in Boston or Tower Hill Botanical garden both only about an hour away from me!...See MoreMy first AHS Display Garden visit- Cat Lady's Garden installment
Comments (8)Glad you are all enjoying these. I know I just love to view everyone's pictures even when I can't keep up to post replies...keep em coming everyone! Debra, The cats were there and a portion of her sales went to support a local charity for a spay/neuter program for stray cats. But, darn it, my camera batteries ran out of juice before I got done with daylilies or I'd have taken some photos of the cats too. It was a tough choice to make...cats vs daylilies... LOL...See Morewhat attraction(s) do you recommend visiting in PA?
Comments (24)Hi! I love PA and its history. I lived out in the eastern part of the state for a while and the Harley Davidson plant is pretty cool...so are the little towns of Amish (as suggested above). If you're heading up to Erie (Presque Isle is GREAT!!!!) you could hit Oil City and check out the great old mansioins and museums. If you're heading north, check out the Allegheny Nat'l Park, too...there are tons of great places to stay for a night in a cabin on the lake. If you head south, you can always hit the city of Pittsburgh and take in the history there. The science center, station square, museums and strip district are always fun...even for those of us born and raised out here!!!!!!! You could always hit the PS grand canyon, too...heard it is beautiful! Hope you enjoy the trip and I can't wait to hear where you went!!! Take care and journey safe! ~k...See Morediane_nj 6b/7a
