lasagna vs. Donn's instant bed: where to put my WS seedlings
Comments (6)My preference is as follows... If you can dig up the sod, Donn's method. If you can't dig up the sod, lasagna the place. I will usually let the lasagna sit for a season though and you won't have the time. I wanted to put a garden along the ditch on our front lawn in this space around the birch... ... and here it is a couple of weeks later with Buddleias and winter sown newbies last year in late August I think. You should see everything filling in this year. You won't kill all the sod which you turn over but if you are diligent about weeding it once a week the task becomes less tedious. Now I can go by a couple of weeks without seeing any weeds resurface from the old lawn. The soil is really beautiful. I make lagnas in areas where we've cleared the brush - too many roots for me to start dealiing with it....See MoreLasagna - do you prefer cottage cheese or ricotta?
Comments (49)Yes, the whey is clear and a bit yellow. When you heat it you start to see bits of milk protein forming in the whey, that's the stuff that becomes ricotta. Mike, I salt when I pull the cheese and I make it when I want it, I don't try to store it. It gets a texture I don't care for when I try to store it in brine. I heat it on the stovetop, although I've been known to reheat in the microwave when it gets too cold to pull well. I'm still just starting on this, I took a cheesemaking class a few months ago. I use my old Harvest Maid dehydrator to make yogurt, but I don't have very much whey when I make yogurt, so I wouldn't get much ricotta, I don't think. Then again, I've never tried it so maybe I would... Annie...See Morecottage cheese in vegetable lasagna
Comments (25)You know, you could make the lasagne with just the sauce and the cheese (and I don't like cottage cheese in white lasagne, I find it makes it taste sour) and serve steamed veggies on the side. You can go ahead and put the spinach in the dish (I love spinach in a white lasagne). I wouldn't puree any veggies for a white sauce. They would muddy the colour....See MoreLasagna w/cheddar cheese?
Comments (23)Well, inspired by my own recommendation ;-) I made a "southwestern lasagna" tonight. The sauce was essentially peppers, onions, ground turkey, diced tomato, a couple cans of diced green chilis, chili powder, a few other spices and hot sauces to add some life... and then I layered no-boil lasagna sheets with the sauce, sour cream and cheddar cheese. Yum! DW told me to feel free to add it to the rotation....See More- 10 years ago
