How long should a French drain take to drain?

Hi,

I dug a trench for a French drain for my basement sump pump, 10 ft by 2ft x 2ft, with a one percent grade. I filled most of it with pebble today (there is a corrugated 4in tube on top of the pebble). There were a few inches of water in the trench when I began this morning (the trench had been completed prior to this morning).

The sump ran once during the day and by late afternoon the water had not drained into surrounding soil/clay/sand much at all (if any).

Should the water be dispersing quicker for this drain to be effective? I was hoping to improve on the very small drain which was in place before (about one bag of pebbles stone) since the area had been very mushy.

Thanks.
