Name That Plant!

Garden Pests?

I just moved to a new property just outside of Boston. I have a pretty large yard for the city but this yard has not seen care in years. Besides Ragweed I have several other plants that have taken over the yard this one has taken over the border growing all along a cement wall.

The second picture is the seed pod that are on top of all the plants.

I'd say a Vicia sp. But I cant differentiate them w/o a flower.

Some sort of vetch? Can you take a picture outside? And flowers? Is it woody? I don't see a seed pod in the second picture.

Eggs of beet leaf miner fly. I'd do an inspection every day for a few weeks, smushing them whenever you see them. Beet greens are one of my essential garden foods....no way that I'll share with an aggressive leaf miner.

I've got the same "problem", the last two nights the dragon fruit plants have had tons of flowers open. And the bees were all over the open flowers early in the morning, flying all around and buzzing away.Probably my own fault, since I let X-teen thousand live in my back yard. A local lady who is with the extension service/Master Gardener and used to write a bi-weekly garden column for a local paper. Heard her speak a few times, she tells a story of when ever she would do an column about backyard butterfly gardening. After a few weeks of the article she would start getting the phone calls and emails....."I saw your article about butterfly gardening, planted this, this, this and this like you recommended, but now I have caterpillars eating the plants. How do I get rid if the caterpillars?"

Thank you both. I do have a fence. Deer are not the problem. It's the small buggers. I have done everything in my life to catch, trap, shoot, deter these plant eating, tick carrying pains in my butt. I have stopped growing things I have no control over and started going weekly to the farmers market. Somehow, shopping for local organic veggies is much more relaxing than finding my plants eaten by rodents. I'm tired. I have to get an electric fence out there. The fence I have has chicken wire at the bottom and along the ground but that does absolutely nothing. Do I have to cover everything with row covers? Pick off every single bad bug? Set traps everyday? What do you tell yourself to keep from crying and giving up? Maybe it's time to pay someone to come weekly to do some of the work. I already have a yard/mower guy but I don't trust that he knows how to garden, from what I've seen. My garden has always been my sanctuary, my pleasure, my relaxation. Now it's a source of heartache, physical pain, and frustration. I also have Lyme, chronic lyme, from the ticks on the rodents, which adds paranoia to the feelings.

updated with seed pods. I will try and get a picture tomorrow morning.

It looks to me like crown vetch. Crown vetch has those kind of seed pods and leaves and grows in fields so it could easily invade an unkempt garden

Crown Vetch looks a good fit on the evidence so far. Securigera varia.

Thanks a lot guys. I looked up crown vetch and I think you are right. I have a lot of weeding to do over the next few months. I am going to try and get the vetch up before those seeds drop.

==>> john.. seriously dude ... hire a lawn service.. and spend the dough.. next year.. for them to eradicate it all.. and get you on the road to a fine lawn ...

you are not going to 'weed out' years of dropped seed ...

you need to basically.. grow the lawn so lush.. it chokes out.. and buries all the old seed ... while you kill all those that sprout next spring ...

you can do it with the famous brand 4 bag all season system ... for about the same cost the pro's will handle it for ...

once they get you going.. and you get your learning curve up ... you can do it all yourself ...

i know there is a hardcore lawn warrior forum ... if you want to go way over the top.. and do it yourself ...
