Late sprouter for me - Pawpaw
Comments (6)I must confess. I don't think I've ever eaten a pawpaw so I don't know if I'd like them. They have a mushy texture I've read. Maybe they'd make good smoothies. I mostly planted them as a host plant for zebra swallowtails. I got impatient and dug down into one of my other containers and found a sprout so that will make three. I need at least two to survive so they can pollinate each other. Mo girl - If you would like to have my remaining seeds, email me. I won't use them. There's only about a half dozen but they're big seeds. They've been in my frig so they should still germinate. The link below says: "Under ideal greenhouse culture, germination can be expected in about seven weeks. Seeds field-planted in the fall will emerge the following July or August. But before the shoot emerges, the seed will have sent down a 10 inch long tap root". I think if you planted them now, they would come up in the fall since they're already been cold stratified. Here is a link that might be useful: Pawpaw...See MoreAny chance this is a pawpaw tree?
Comments (2)Well as I am in Kentucky that would make a great deal of sense. A quick google image search seems to confirm thanks....See MoreFloor for screened porch in Northeast, any updates?
Comments (7)I just installed Millboard on our new porch, second story over walk-out basement patio, and the stairs leading down from the porch. The company is Outlive and located in Minnesota. The decking is just amazing. We haven't quite finished because our contractor was very late in starting, so painting will need to wait until spring. Our Millboard is the Enhanced Grain Smoked Oak, but they have many color choices. Cleaning with soap and water is all that is needed once a year, although our big and often muddy dog leaves paw prints. They wipe or sweep off easily. The Millboard is not slippery when wet-our dog goes racing and leaping down them and has not slipped once. Apparently there is some sort of coating that the rain will wash off (and that I will need to wash off on the screened porch), but once it is off it is not at all slippery. The surface is a mold of actual trees and there are six different patterns that the installer has to vary to make it look natural. I included the link below. John Fowler is the founder of Outlive. Everyone at the company seems to be wonderful. I could not be happier. Outlive...See MoreSpin out bags? Any updates?
Comments (13)Jan, perhaps our "expectations" just weren't realistic. Almost nothing will stop tree roots from invading forever. If I could go back and do it all over again, would I? Yes. The spinout bags bought my hosta time to grow. Without them, they began to grow, then stopped, then declined. Another option is to grow hosta in pots in the ground. I have had a hosta in a pot for 4 years (?) now. Nothing is an easy fix, but the trick (maybe) is to not to have too big of a pot---and if you can turn the pot once or twice a season---much better. But I didn't turn the pot because it was too big and heavy (and I forgot). After a few years, I dug around the pot to find tree roots circling around the outside of the pot and in the pot. I cut the roots going into the pot and removed the roots circling around the pot. This year will be five years in the same pot....See Morecreekweb
