what to do after flowers die?
Comments (3)thanks plant guy...the instructions on your web site were very detailed and seem easy enough...I'll give it a shot. I didnt think ammaryllus could be planted outdoors in ohio and I probably would have left it in the cheap plastic pot that came with the kit forever. when I bring it in next fall I will be sure to put it in a good pot with drainage etc. I will also pass this info on to my Grandma and hopefully hers will bloom again too. Thanks again.....Chanda...See MoreShould I cut down my iris after it blooms and flowers die?
Comments (1)Cutting back the foliage on beardeds is done strictly for cosmetic purposes. It is not beneficial to the plant. Some people snap the bloom stalk off at its base after bloom finishes. I remove spent blooms and let the stalk turn yellow before removing. The FAQ at the top of the page has info regarding foliage under transplanting....See MorePlants turn dry and brown after flowering
Comments (7)As far as the buds turning brown and failing to open, I was told years ago to spray them in the spring with something called (I think) Benedryl (or a name something like that--bene- something). It worked for the first few years after I planted my peonies. Then I ran out and never got around to buying any more. However, turned out I no longer needed it. When my peonies got more mature--let's say, 5-6 years old--the buds quit turning brown on their own. An occasional bud might still do it, but most of the buds did what they are supposed to do: bloom. Now that I have had most of the peonies in the ground for 15-20-25 years, they do their own thing without my help, to a great extent. However, I too have had problems with the leaves getting big splotches of brown as the summer wears on and gets hotter and hotter. I don't know how to treat that--because I don't know what it is. So I will be interested in any ideas any of you can share on solving that problem. Thanks, Kate...See MoreAgave which do NOT die after flowering?
Comments (6)Cut the bloom off before it makes seeds. The plant's entire job is to make seeds, so if you keep it from doing that, you can keep it alive longer. However, you'll have an ugly dead stalk in the middle, and it will eventually try to make more seeds, because that is its sole purpose in life. Do you not have pups? Agaves are like bananas. You don't want to get rid of all the pups, because then the plant blooms, dies and you have nothing....See Morerhizo_1 (North AL) zone 7
