I have some in a mix of bark, charcoal, and pearlite. For a year or so I've been using lava rock. Works for me with a heavy hand on the hose. I get a lot of new bulbs. In time the plant creates multiple leads. This plant has been easy for me. The only issue is to be vigilant on pests. A few years ago I was turned on to maxi-crop. Norwegian seaweed juice. It contains a natural humic acid, a root stimulator. Using that every 2 weeks has been a game changer for me. Roots are fat with long translucent tips.

Might I recommend checking out Sunset Valley Orchids? They're doing some hefty Catt hybridizing using award winning parents and have lots to show for it. Plus they're affordable! In any case, if you're looking for suggestions right here and now, I'd go with an Iwanagara Appleblossom. I personally don't have one, but it's compact and is highly regarded as one of best fragranced Catts you can buy with very nice flower and a "must have". I've been looking for a good priced one blooming sized one but haven't found one yet. BEST OF LUCK! Catts are forgiving!

Thanks Ben. My first Cat many years ago. I bought it from a collector/seller. Retired to have a part time business. He has around 3000 orchids. He would sell if he had more than one of a kind. This one was the only one he had. I asked if I could bring it back after it bloomed as it was very large and ready for repot and dividing. He allowed it and gave me 2 division along with a lesson on repotting and dividing. As Catts go, very easy to grow. Blooms every summer. I love the colors. I have 2 divisions blooming size available for trade...

What a GREAT idea for a thread! Currently the only two non-av plants that are blooming is a moth orchid that has been blooming solid for about 10 months, and an unidentified episcia. :) No pics of them, but I totally get what you said at the very beginning where people say "Oh yea, that's nice." I have two large windows full of plants, and people walk in and go "Oh you have a green thumb!" And then change the subject - and I'm like, "OK, never mind I won't tell you about them! They are all different and amazing and have a story, but that's ok. Let's talk about the hardwood." LOL. So nice to have a group of people who appreciate the diversity and amazing therapeutic qualities of houseplants.
