Cleaning 50+ year old pine tongue and groove
Comments (7)I am sorry to be so late with a "thank you reply" to both of you. Couple of things came up for me including MIL in the Intensive Care Unit. Anyway, I learned something from both your replies. Never heard of the Watco Danish Oil but will look into it. Brickeyee, I would guess? that there was originally a shellac finish on this wood. In the places where we remove pictures and such that have been there forever, there is a shiny finish. Everywhere else there is no shine at all. Good thing about an old lake cottage like this is that it's rustic.....beat to heck and back is not a bad thing. Our biggest challenge has been renovating the stinkin kitchen and bath and trying not to get either one too new or prissy. With these pine walls, I just want them cleaned and conditioned. Thanks for your replies, pup...See MoreOT: Ipe Decking 1x6 vs tongue and groove
Comments (6)I've got IPE tongue & groove on my screened-in porch & it's fantastic for us. It gets rain on it through the screens regularly, no problems--there's a puddle, then it dries. We've had it 10-11 years now, in New England (yup, snow drifts in through the screens sometimes). Only problem I've had so far had nothing to do with the wood; Cabot changed their porch oil treatment formula to comply with low VOC rules & it just didn't work well because I didn't catch they'd changed the application rules, so had to sand it instead of just clean & recoat....See Moretongue and groove ceiling paint finish
Comments (4)do you want glossy? glossy will show every imperfection, so make sure your install is nice and clean. If you're going to prime, try and do a very fine sand after the primer to hit any rough spots. clean well before painting. are you doing white paint? I think anything from eggshell to gloss would be fine. just depends on your preference. Use BM Advance. they have the best glossy paint. SW Pro Classic is 2nd. this one looks like a semi...See MorePainting tongue and groove ceilings white in log house?
Comments (19)Thank you for all the feedback. It is really helpful. We really don't plan on going anywhere, which makes me think that I need to choose what will make us most happy for living her another 20 years. I suppose we can take the paint off down the road if it just isn't working out. The contractor wants to get the ceiling painted first before floors and cabinets just because it is easier for them. But we can tell them we want to go slow. I have my heart set on the wood floors and we found something that all 7 of us (hubby and 5 daughters) all like. They are all really wanting to try the painted ceilings too. The girls are ready for a house change (teenagers) and so I think we might just go for it. I found these photos from another log house remodel that look like what we are aiming for. The sink we have now is an 1920's farmhouse that I found at a flea market. I love the look but it is really stained beyond what we can afford to repair. We've been "test driving" it to see if we want to invest in the special sink base we would need. But it hasn't been very comfortable to use... stains easily, small drain, dishes chip easily even with a grid in the bottom. So we are going to put in a new farmhouse sink and keep this one for a work sink elsewhere....See Morekday72
