Cleaning the Tongue & Grooves???

We've carefully pulled up the 100 yr old oak flooring (2.25" x 3/4") in our home with the intent to salvage and reinstall it as we reno. It's in really great shape and I've read all about salvaging hardwood floors. However the thing nobody talks about is -

How do you clean the tongue and groove BEFORE you reinstall it?

There is a plethora of information about de-nailing, sanding, staining, etc. but crickets when it comes to cleaning the tongue and groove so you can get a tight fit between boards.

Is there some other trick to getting a tight seam? Do people just fill in the gaps with wood putty or something?

We've talked to at least 6 wood floor installers who won't touch it because they only know how to install new.

Any guidance, thoughts, advice, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
