How to keep cut bloom looking fresh?

Nicole

Hello all:

My father passed away a couple of days ago. He is the reason I started my rose garden this year. He had loved his rose garden and encouraged me to start one. It has been difficult for him to visit our home because of some health issues, but I had been hoping to bring him by for the fall flush and had been taking pictures to share with him. While his health was ailing, we thought we had plenty of time left. In the end, he never got to see my roses blooming- not even the pictures I took.

I want to bring some blooms to the funeral home tomorrow morning to have cremated with him. I have several blooms on my Austin roses (Falstaff, Molineux, Mary, Abraham Darby and maybe Claire Austin) that look perfect right now. If I cut them now, what is the best way to keep the blooms looking nice until I drop them off tomorrow? What is the best way to package them for the drop off itself?

This is my first season growing roses and I haven't really cut any blooms yet.

Thank you for any advice.
