PBS Program on "Pie"

I came upon this part way into the program on Tuesday night. It was so delightful! I intended to have it on as background while doing some chores, but I was compelled to sit and just watch it.

It showcased down-to-earth artisan pie makers from across the country. Even a little pay-on-the-honor system stand here in NH was featured.

I'm a pie lover & baker & enjoyed seeing the regional varieties (like huckleberry & sweet potato) and different methods people use to craft their pies.

Just putting it out here in case it will be re-broadcast. Bet many of you would enjoy it, too.

Yes I've seen it and I've also seen the one on sandwiches. Then one time they had a show on hot dogs and by the time it was over I was so hungry for a hot dog that I made DH run downtown to the Sonic to get us some chili cheese dogs for lunch. We'd never had them from there before and didn't know how big they were. So he ordered 4!! He came back with these HUGE chili cheese dogs and we gobbled them down. The one on pie almost made me go in and make a pie but I didn't.

I went for years trying and failing on pie crust and gave up. Then a friend gave me her recipe and it works out every time without fail. The biggest thing is don't overwork the dough, form it into a disk, wrap in plastic and chill it for 30 minutes but not too long. Roll it from the center and work your way out, turning it one quarter turn each time and roll it out on a slightly floured piece of plastic wrap with a slightly floured piece on top.

I watched it too and really liked it. I also watched the Bakery one. I watched each of them twice! I enjoyed the ones that featured the Hoosier Sugar Cream Pie. I may have to bake another one tomorrow.

Is this the show? I haven't watched all of it yet, but the teaser I did see mistakenly said that the honor system pie shop was in Vermont. I also make quite a few pies, and I was planning to make one today!

They have a wire cage that is set on a platform eye level high. The feeder that is used most by the bird they are trying to catch is placed inside the cage near where the feeder would hang. The door to the cage is tripped by a line of fishing line when the bird flies in. Then they catch the bird and place it in a mesh bag. It is weighed, tail, beak, and wing measurements taken as well as the sex and weight. A dot of pink paint(some type) is put on the head so that if the bird returns in the cage (and some do) then they know it has been caught already and it is just allowed to feed and leave. Then it is banded and released. Doesn't take long at all and is amazing to watch. I had one banded in Jan. and another bander is coming today to try to band the 4 I have now in my yard. One is suspected to be a Rufous and the others are Ruby-throated. We have another lady in town who has a half dozen in her yard and a guy with about the same. A friend of mine has a Rufous and another guy in a town about a half hour away had over a dozen banded in Jan and another half dozen now that are not banded. The banders are trying to determine if the migrating path has come further south than once and if we in Central Florida are now getting resident year round birds. Really interesting stuff and fills the void for us who don't have them in the summer when the butterflies are around.

Hi Always thought that the runaway most interesting plants from a historical point of view are Cotton, Wheat, Cocoa , and of course the sweet spices.. Mainly because you can't arrive at a true history. They have been valuable before recorded history and continue to be "Priceless" lol gary

OMG!! Love that, "the best pie is the one you're eating." Well, mostly! I've always had an idea in the back of my mind to open a drive through pie stand with hand pies I even have a name for it, "Pies on the Fly." The only problem with this dream is that I am a lousy pie maker. And lord knows I have tried over the years. And I only like eating them, don't much care for making them. Oh, and I doubt folks around here would pay the prices that those pies sell for. They would just buy the fruit and make their own. In an upscale urban or tourist spot I might have more luck, but the tourist season in MI is mighty short.

Oh, and that antique apple peeling machine made my heart jump a beat!

I just caught the rebroadcast of the special this week. Can you guess what I want for dessert? Yes, it's pie! I might try to re-create the Hoosier sugar cream pie based on what I can see on the broadcast that I have saved on my DVR . Mmmmmmm, pie!

L, no one around here would pay that for a pie either, we have too many roadside Amish stands (also mostly on the honor system), small town bakeries and church pie sales. The Downtown Market in Grand Rapids sells a pie for $24.99, though, and a loaf of Stollen last Christmas was $27.00 and people are buying them, so you're right about location.

I didn't see that program, but now I'm going to watch for it. I tried to watch it on Lars' link (thanks, Lars!), but my old computer and slow internet got me through the first minute in somewhere around 13 minutes, the rest was all "buffering". I'll have to watch for a rerun!

I've never had a Hoosier pie - it sounds very strange to me. I did see this show again a couple of days ago (or maybe yesterday), and I also watched a somewhat similar PBS show called "Sandwiches That You Will Like", but I cannot find a video of it on-line. I especially liked the sandwich shops in uptown New Orleans and Houston, which made me nostalgic for those cities. The sandwich shop in Houston was run by a woman from Ville Platte, Louisiana. The show said that her shop was in the Third Ward, but it was actually in East Downtown, between the Second Ward and the Third Ward. Sadly, this shop was closed by a fire.

I'm getting a bit off the subject, but it was a PBS show that I found to be similar to the pie show. I like sandwich shops better, and especially ones in Houston and New Orleans.

I just watched it. Really terrific. I really have to learn to make pie. I just can't seem to master the crust.

I made Sugar Cream Pie today. Here's a photo of a slice, with a side of peaches! I've never made this before and have no clue as to how it's supposed to look in terms of color, but ....Yum!

Saw that show before and really enjoyed it. There's a few of those shows that are similar in theme and I enjoy equally well.
