Thompson & Morgan offered a double during one year and I ordered it. I will agree that they are particularly beautiful and I should have saved seed. Cannot recall seed even forming. I have not seen it offered since. Saved seed may breed true and it certainly would be worth the try.

Yes, I gotta agree with you there Inga. I had the single - and there is also a white form of the single I believe - but I've had a real battle in this climate to control that; it seeds everywhere. I have a few late ones coming up (of the single blue) from last year but none in flower at the moment. I might have a pic tucked away in this computer, somewhere, if I can find one I'll post it. B

Just to add to the confusion.....One of the local Orchid Society members at the spring orchid show had three pots of the large straggley red flowered Unknown Epi in bloom for $30 a pot. I suggested she mark the price down. Didn't! So she took the pots home. I have quite a few Epidendrums, but no room for the large straggly old timers. Orchid nurseries are aware of this and I think it was Cal Orchids who did some breeding to reduce plant size, but try and keep the floral display. I have one in bloom at the moment. Epi. Pretty Princess 'Yellow Butterfly' a miniature in bloom on a 12 inch plant. Go to the orchid register and you find that the parent orchids are Unknown as is the Originator. Maybe it was a stray pollination and someone noticed the miniature plant habit and easy growing properties. There might more success in finding some of the old timers in garden plant sources.
