DCS 30 vs Wolf 30 vs DCS 36

New to GW. I have been reading everything on this website for a few weeks now. For those of us who have the need to research everything twice, analyze and overanalyze, this has been both a blessing and a curse. I see many "regulars". Do you get paid, work in the industry, or just do this as a hobby? Anyway, thank you all.

Here's what I need help deciding. I need an AG range, 30" or 36". After much research I have narrowed it down to a DCS 30", a Wolf 30", or for $400 more (not including the increase cost of a 36" vent) a DCS 36" (36" Wolf is out of budget.).

If you have any opinions about any of THESE, I would love to hear them. Please don't tell me I should consider X, Y, or Z.... trust me, I have considered ALL of them and have ruled them out for my purposes. If you suggest I look at something else I will pull my hair out.

Here are my pro/cons. I know there is info on all of these issues out there, but if you have any input about these relative to the above choice I'd appreciate it.

Cooktop: DCS is stainless, Wolf is porcelain. I like the look of porcelain and it seems like it would clean more easily but many seem to think the SS cleans well.

Racks: Wolf does not have the sliding racks, DCS does. Sure seems like a great feature. Looks like I can buy sliding racks for the Wolf for about $150 each though.

Burner arrangement: DCS 30 has a 5 burner arrangement that looks like it might be very functional. I can see myself using the middle burner often.

Customer Service/ Reliability: Reviews seem pretty good on both but I have heard more positives about Wolf.

Both ranges appear to have good power as well as good simmer ability.

I am concerned about the DCS noisy fan (haven't heard it, just read about it) and its relatively short oven (10.5" usable vertical space). Anyone have problems there?

As for Wolf, I am concerned about the reports of burner going out when the oven is on. I am also worried about spilling things down the open vents that are in the back.

As to the 30" vs 36" debate, I have read the arguments about that too. Bigger seems nice but is it worth the extra cost? Also affecting that decision is if I get the 36", it comes with the FP dishwasher drawers (which I accounted for in my price difference above), whereas if I get the 30" I will go with Bosch or Miele.

I decided on the DCS 36 with the "free" dish washer drawers, but I have not installed any of them yet since the remodel is just starting. Wish I could be more help.

IMO, Capital being smaller and "newer" and fighting for floor space by good word-of-mouth will "try harder". At the much larger F&P, I would think every customer is just a number. I bought a 48" Capital Precision 8 burner gas rangetop, sight unseen, based on reviews on GW, where I first heard of the brand, and based on my numerous phone calls with them. They were extremely patient while I sort of freaked out after my appliance retailer told me that due to whatever reason, my rangetop was going to be delayed beyond the 12 week window I was quoted (I ordered at the end of Oct. and the holdays were coming, blah blah). I think the delay originated with my area distributor wanting a full truckload or something, but all parties rallied and I got my range within the promised time frame which prevented my countertop fabrication from being held up! It is beautiful and I can hardly wait to cook on it! But, I wasn't yet done harrassing the kind people at Capital and my GC, KD, and myself, called their tech guys a thousand times as we tried to get my rangetop installed flush to the countertop AND cabinet face (I have a very deep cab. and can get it that way). It was designed to sit on top of the counter and in front of the cabinets - exactly as it would if it were a regular range installed in a 24" deep cab. But I dind't want it that way, and through persistance I'm told I'm ultimately able to have it the way I want it. I'm most impressed and grateful to the professional and friendly service we've had after the money was already spent, and fully expect that IF I have any troubles with performance that they will be quickly corrected. I never looked at DCS; are the prices similar?

I would sure find out who is making the Caldera now, and what the spare part supplies are, and who can service it. There are a bunch of those gas cooktops for sale and like you said , at a very low price. If you have to wait 4 days for a reply when you are buying one (and they are getting your money)---what do you think will happen should it need warranty service---40 days for a reply??? Even though I had a warranty, it was useless, was EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to get a call returned (Old Caldera Corp), and when I finally did reach them they sent me a control board (I had to pay for it) and also install it. That of course did not fix the problem as I'm pretty sure the problem was in the touch pad. Sure hope your luck is better than mine, but unless you get answers to "Who is making it now" are there spare parts, and who can install them, I think your shopping trip is gonna be "An Exercise in Futility"!!! Have you looked at Capital? The engineers behind the highly rated DCS of yesteryear left DCS and started Capital. I do believe DCS is now owned by Fisher Paykel. Have you read the reviews on the Appliance forum? I love my Capital 36" range. They have changed the grates (there was an issue with possible tipping pots). Their customer service is great. I called and told them that my oven racks weren't rolling like they did in the showroom, and they sent me a new rack. It glides so smoothly. Plus this range (if you get the self clean) comes with a rotisserie. If you have room for the 36", I think you should go for it. It is so nice having multiple large pots and pans on the range without hanging off the side. Even if you don't use all the burners at once, just the extra room is great. But remember, bigger range, bigger ventilation system needed. You need to add that into your budget. Here is a link that might be useful: Capital's Website

30' Blue Star vs 48' DCS

Well, I bought the DCS. I ended up getting a two year old 48" all gas DCS with 4 burners, grill and griddle for $3k. Local retail is $7350 new. That's $750 less than I was planning to spend on a new 30" Blue Star and $2200 less than the 36" BS that hubby wanted (he wanted it for the griddle). It looks almost unused. The ovens are perfect but the grill will need some cleaning. The griddle doesn't show any signs of use at all. I couldn't walk away from that deal. A home was being renovated by new owners and it was just too much stove for the kitchen and they don't cook anyway. The BS sounded good because it didn't have any electronics (which we all know are the first thing to die) but the DCS doesn't either. I also liked the super powerful burners but the 17k btu for the DCS is probably fine for me, since I don't do a whole lot of wok cooking, though I will need to buy a wok ring which the BS would not have needed. Of course, the 2k I saved on the range now gets to be spent on removing 3 cabinets and buying a hood. I can live without the cabinets, it was probably time to clean out anyway. So, all in all, I think I got a good deal. The guy who is intalling my gas hookup used to sell DCS and so he will be able to help get it set up properly. Any way you look at it - it's gotta be an improvement over the 13 year old 30" ceramic top jennaire. :)

Have a DCS 30" dual fuel. No complaints about the fan, but that's a subjective issue. My Zephyr hood is noisier. In general, a very nice, heavy duty appliance. The bead blasted stainless cooktop requires patience when cleaning. You can get it perfect but it takes elbow grease and multiple steps using oven cleaner and sturdy cloth. Don't use any abrasives like Barkeeper's Friend or Scotchbrite pads. You'll scratch it and there's no way to repair it. When you first get it, wipe the cooktop down with some acetone before using it. They use sticky tape to hold down the burners in shipment and the glue residue from that tape will burn right into the cooktop. And it's extremely difficult to get off. The acetone will help you avoid that issue.
