Can I request a subcontractor be fired?
Comments (12)Why do you seem to assume that my GC disagreed with my assessment? "He admits he was unprofessional for awhile but seems to believe he is still capable of finishing the job.... This is the first week in this 5 month project that I am losing faith in the GC, and I think he is avoiding us, and his tone of voice sounds different. I told him we want to walk through everything and see what needs to be done and talk about it. He said he'd call about this weekend when we spoke Friday, and I haven't heard from him as of late Saturday." That sure doesn't sound like a meeting of the minds to me. there have been 5 areas during our build that my husband and I have disagreed with the subs on the way something should be installed (plumbing, electrical, exterior trim, roofing and masonry). In all cases, the end result was that we were right and the "professionals" were wrong. I don't doubt it. But if that's the case, why do you stick with your gc?? Or does he/she only follow your lead? Subs that delay, screw up and create their priorities are an unavoidable part of any build. On my latest project, I fired the siding company after two weeks of incomplete work, terminated the drywall company (and the drunken, drug-abusing taper he hired) and switched to a different railing company after the owner proved incompetent. As to firing a GC who found fault in the way I handled that situation, let's just say that if you had signed our contract, you would not want to be fired. What precisely does that mean? That you're paying an enormously high price? that you have a unilateral right to levy fees on the GC? Personally, if every time I turned around, the owner was second-guessing me I'd be happy to end the arrangement. Really, if you are so proficient in the art of building and have the time to be on site constantly, why aren't you gc ing the project yourself. Hiring a "gofer" might be a lot easier on you than sitting on the gc's shoulder. Best of luck!...See MoreReason(s) for not putting detergent inside drum?
Comments (29)Sheesh, I wonder whether the lady from Whirlpool came up with that lie by herself, or Whirlpool taught it to her. A few facts: 1) Government regulations, both the mandatory ones and the voluntary ones, don't specify temperature. Rather, they regulate energy (and water) consumption. 2) The only mandate (hard requirement) for US washing machines is the Federal Standard. This is a very loose standard, especially as applied to front-loaders. The current one, up until the end of this year, doesn't even include a limitation on water consumption. Well, for the rest, I'll copy something I posted a few months ago in another thread: =========================================================== [Gardenweb member name omitted], your statement "Getting HOT water on a regular cycle is a joke, just like all Energy Star machines" expresses a nearly universal misunderstanding. I'll try to set the record straight here. First, a little background. Clothes washer efficiency is expressed in terms of Modified Energy Factor (MEF) and Water Factor (WF). Higher MEF is more energy-efficient, and lower WF is more water-efficient. This page Clothes Washers Key Product Criteria defines MEF and WF, and says the Energy Star standards require MEF >= 1.8, and WF Do a "Quick Search" for model number WF419 on Find ENERGY STAR Qualified Clothes Washers to find that the Samsung WF419 has an MEF of 2.86 and a WF of 3.11. So, the WF419 is way more efficient than required by Energy Star. Why? The answer is likely found on Tax Incentives Assistance Project where you can see that the WF419 exceeds the criteria for earning a $250/unit tax credit, with no annual cap. So your washer, and many others, go way beyond the Energy Star requirements, in order to earn a very substantial tax credit. I don't know why they go beyond even the tax credit requirements. So, while everyone thinks that appliance manufacturers have had standards forced on them by the government, and therefore forgives the manufacturers for performance compromises, the fact is that the manufacturers are getting money for selling compromised machines. Not being familiar with the economics of the industry, I don't know how much of that money improves their bottom line, and how much it reduces the price you pay. I'm not opposed to conservation, and I'm not opposed to tax credit incentives. But if the facts are known only by one side of the transaction (the industry), then it isn't truly a "free-market incentive", and the consumer is at a disadvantage....See MorePenny Tile Floor - Messed Up Job
Comments (6)Thanks for all the replies-- they are helpful. @Homebound, I think what you are requesting is reasonable. Truth be told-- I have become friendly with contractor over the past few years (he has done other work-- but no tile work). This makes the process a bit more painful. I don't have a problem with the wall tile-- but as you can see from photo--- some corners were cut. As you can see he tiled around shower rod-- that one I don't understand at all as I had asked him to remove shower rod. (the photo was flipped). I will meet up with him in a few days to discuss. I'm leaning towards having him rip out existing floor--- and biting the bullet and having someone else install the floor tile. Comments (7)It sounds as if this BF should have never been allowed around these children ...ever, never, not even at their mother's house. It sounds as if this mother had little concern for the safety and well being of her children in the first place. And Dad? What's up with that? Who lets their children take off with anyone who is not expected to be picking them up at least without verifying with the absent parent. Why was father not informed BF and mother are fighting with knifes (fighting at all). But this incident could have occurred whether the BF was a BF, father or stepfather. Angry and/or hurt people can do awful things. With that said. Can't say I blame you for objecting to a GF signing anything school related, Ashley. I would not blame you either if you did not allow others (no matter who they are) to pick up your child. Especially if you were not pre-informed that someone other than your ex was picking the child up. I seriously think it's a good idea to phone the day of pick-up just for clarification on who and when pick-ups will be. I would hope any parent fighting with or other wise estranged from a BF, SF, husband whatever would also have sense enough to phone the school/opposite home, inform them of the changed situation and be assured that the child/children will not be released to a possible danger. --"This is why I don't want people "calling" her SM when she isn't married to X, giving others (such as the daycare she picked him up from and the school that accepted a report card that she signed) the impression she has any type of authority or legal rights to my son.--" This should not be happening even if you absolutely knew she was the safest/nicest person who ever lived. I'd seriously have a discussion with the school over what is acceptable and what is not and follow it up with your ex who has no business handing off his responsibility to GF. Currently this GF is no more to your child as far as the school should be concerned than a strange lady. She's nobody as far as dealing with your child in a school situation. GFs come and go, they are not reliable fixtures in a BF's life. He could dump her at any minute, kick her out the door blah blah. It's not up to a school to keep up with who the latest lady/gentleman a parent might be 'dating' now or shacking up with. They should not be on the emergency contact list nor the 'allowed to' list....See MoreNothing Left to Say
