replacing HVAC in the attic and blown insulation
Comments (1)Do you live in New Jersey? Is this energy audit making recommendations under the NJ Energy Star program? I assume you currently have fiberglass batts installed between the attic floor joists and they are covered with plywood. Is this correct? It seems it would difficult to a build a storage platform after the blowing in the insulation. I think what is typically done is to build a low wall around the storage area in order to hold back the blown in insulation. Some of the duct work would be covered which would give it a high insulation value, but some of it may not. If you do increase the insulation in your attic, then this should be factored in when sizing your furnace and AC. You may be able to go to smaller sizes. Be careful about energy audits. These guys make all kinds of claims of how much energy you will save and the pay back is only a few years. In reality the prices tend the be high and the savings are lower than expected....See MoreHow to insulate empty attic (no equipment)?

Rolling fiberglass batts perpendicular over the existing insulation is fast and easy, cheap and effective. Just don't block the soffit vents. Finding and stopping air flow should be your first priority though. So I found out from my builder that the attic over the colder master suite area is: R38 & is passive ventilation via combination of eaves, ridges, & side gables. Also that side has 4" walls vs. 6" for the rest of the house. So that explains some of the causes. Additional topping of blown cellulose would be no problem in an unused space but can it actually provide more comfort if I took it to R60? I really don't care about savings as much as comfort when all is said & done esp. if it's just 5% for 675 sq ft. Just don't want to have to pay for a Bentley (foam) when I could be happy with a Mercedes (more cellulose) if you know what I mean....See MoreBlown in attic insulation
Comments (5)seal the holes from inside the house. recessed cans can be retrofitted with air tight inserts cuts between sheetrock and a/c supply boxes can be sealed with mastic tape also oversized cuts at bath fans, and stove vents can be sealed with mastic tape. caulking does not seal sheetrock cuts. if you have ceiling moldings they are often hole cover uppers where the ceiling and walls meet is often a sizeable gap. caulk top of moldings to ceiling bottom of moldings to walls. have an energy audit with a blower door test..duct test. make sure that they show you where the leaks are. free audits often do not show what you need to know about your house, and I'm hearing of companies who do these free audits that don't show the ho the leakage, but bid the job to fix. hire an independent auditor to test before and identify leakage..get recommendations as to how to seal the leakage sites..get the sealing done or diy..have indpendent auditor to come back and retest. if you have a blown fg you can find the leakage by looking for discolored fg. as the air moves thru the insulation it leaves dust particles these dirt trails are above leakage sites. are you sure that nothing else is going on to increase utility costs? you may want to start your own current thread rather than use a years old thread... best of luck...See MoreRockwool vs Blown In Fiberglass Attic Insulation
Comments (5)It's hard to find real numbers for your issue. I just removed old mineral fiber insulation from the attic of a renovation I am doing. I was surprised how heavy it was. I could hardly lift a full trash bag of it. Anyway, here's one source I found. It does seem there's a real benefit for sound reduction....See Morekudzu9
