Smaller homes on smaller lots
Comments (6)Our lot is weird, it's a very long skinny wedge and most of it is driveway. :-) Our whole "lawn" is maybe 30x100 feet of lumpy, bumpy sorta-green stuff (mostly crabgrass I think), too sloped to even put a picnic table on, and the rest of the lot is scrub woods. I'll gladly let someone else do the gardening, I hate grubbing in the dirt and I just don't understand the people who think it's so darn much fun! If I didn't have such a desperate need for privacy (I don't really like people that much!) we'd have bought a condo where outdoor maintenance was included... a house really is an awful lot of hassle, but I was so miserable in condos and apartments. The last two years we've had a mow-and-blow landscaping service provided by my DH's employer (in order to free up his time to work ridiculously long hours... 80 hour weeks were common, he worked through two vacations and for 5 years there wasn't a single day when he didn't do SOMEthing for his job), he's left that job and is going to have to do the yardwork himself now - oh is he going to b*tch. :-) We got a nasty 10" snow/ice mix. Yuck. It was so windy every time DH shoveled or Plow Guy plowed, the snow blew back over the walk and stairs and d'way, and then it settled and froze solid today. Very unpleasant....See MoreGardening around the smaller home
Comments (24)Margaret, I'm already getting the berries eaten off of our VC by the birds. I do love the RED leaves in the Fall. I've also made lots of wreaths with my VC. We've been in our house for 25 1/2 years and it's been the best "privacy" fence I've ever had. About 4 summers ago we had a severe drought and even our irrigation was shut off most of the summer. We were on a very strict watering schedule by the City and I was shocked to find my VC didn't take much water at all. It made us feel like there wasn't a drought and my yards looked lush unless you looked closely at the lawn which was brownish in spots but the VC is such a resiliant plant. I love it!!! And now this summer we've had alot more rain and again, it looks great! This is a shot where I had just cleaned out about half of it a few days ago. I need to go pull that "dead" piece out of there...LOL. Here's the north end of the yard. Like I said, it gives us lots of privacy. Comments (1)It really depends on how you work and whether you have room in the main working part of the kitchen for some of your food items. I had a kitchen with a pantry across a wide aisle from the kitchen itself. There was little cabinetry in the kitchen itself -- more dish storage and such across from the breakfast nook so everything, including a little of this spice or that had to come from the pantry. And it was about 7 or 8 feet deep with narrow shelves on one side. I loved the kitchen when we bought the house and couldn't stand to work in it by the time we left. My corner pantry in this house was an improvement in location, but not organization. I changed it to pantry cabinets with rollouts and a pullout that are actually a bit further form my main work areas (a few steps), but I also use some of the space in my main work area for flour, sugar and other baking supplies in deep drawers, my spices in a top shallow drawer and oils, vinegars and such right at hand above. I don't have to make as many trips to the pantry as I did before and it's not as far. For me, this is working out best of all. I can see either of your design choices working out well, but you need to thing about the type of cooking you do, how you work and how you would use the space -- what you would store in each cabinet and drawer. It's a pain to break everything down that much, but it's necessary to see how it all works for you....See MoreReplacing big 1940s convectors with smaller European style
Comments (1)You should be able to find the type and style hydronic emitter that you are looking for however there are important things to keep in mind. Such as how many Btu the room requires, the water temperature output of your boiler, the Btu output of the radiator that will match your boiler’s water temperature output (˚F or ˚C), your room’s heating requirement (Btu) and the flow rate (GPM) of your system. Consult an experienced hydronic heating specialist after you’ve made your selection and before purchase to be sure it will all work; ask about the possibility of including a thermostatic control on the radiator to regulate the temperature in that room apart from the rest of the house.
