I've also heard that Cherimoyas don't do well in Florida's heat, as they are from pretty high up in the Andes. However, Atemoyas, which are hybrids of Cherimoya and the related Sugar Apple (Annona squamosa x Annona cherimola) are grown in South Florida. The taste is supposed to be similar enough that the two fruits get confused. Joy, any chance that your friend grows Atemoya instead of Cherimoya? I went a tad overboard myself this year. I only intended to replace two plums which had left holes in my 10 tree orchard lineup. But we got irrigation water awarded to us last year, and on the assumption that we'd get it again this year, I folded and decided to put in the second line of trees. Plus it'd be nice to get some highway noise reduction started, so I.. well... We are starting from scratch. In October we moved into a ten year old home in the desert. The soil is your basic rock quarry, and what little was growing here (7 palm trees and some shrubby looking stuff), I pulled out and got rid of. So far we've planted: 1 delonix regia in the front yard for shade. 1 panamint nectarine 1 little cado avacado (which everyone tells me will die within two years due to the high salt content of our water. ). 4 arapaho black berry plants which will probably also die for the same reasons. 7 figs. (1 kadota, 1 black mission, 1 bordoux, 2 "honey figs", and 2 unknow local dark figs I took cuttings from). 5 citrus. (1 tangerine, 2 oranges, 1 tangelo, 1 grapefruit). 2 tacoma stans, a palos verde, 1 honeyscukle and a couple of other smallish landscape flowering shrubs and plants. Other than that....some squash, 4 tomatoes, swiss chard, and collards pretty much rounds out the "projects" for this year. Besides the cost of these guys, I had to buy an electric jack hammer (called a demolition hammer) in order to dig adequate planting holes and beds in our rocky yard. The soil to rock ratio is literally about 50/50. Prior to buying the "hammer", it took us four hours to dig a hole barely large enough for the nectarine tree. As an aside, would anybody like some free rocks?

Tonya, I put Chocolate plant next to your name as soon as I read your first request. I've got lots of them, they reseed easily and are growing in several places around the yard, however I wouldn't call them invasive -- they sort of politely reseed just where they look the best, LOL, so if anybody else wants one just let me know so I can dig some up.
