Need help with layout for my house

Dear All, please help me with the layout of the house. The first picture is the original house plans. The second is my first attempt with the addition (the green square the addition about 400 sq ft total). The total budget would be around $150K in SoCal. We plan on using IKEA cabinets in the kitchen. Probably no uppers because we'd like to put windows up high all along the left side of the house.

Our goals for the addition were to:

1. Convert existing dining room to study.

2. Adding a master bathroom

3. Move the kitchen to the back of the house

4. Add a half bath

We have no plans to touch the fireplace or the two bedrooms and bathroom on the right side of the house.

It is a good first run... More to do.

4x7 is a terrible size for a master closet. You need 6 foot minimum width for it to be a functional walkin, otherwise you may as well do a reach in (it takes up 1/2 the space and stores the same amount). Many people on here will tell you you need at least 7' width, but I find a bit of 6 as a minimum...

So, I'd combine the kitchen pantry with WIC, and then do a kitchen pantry that is a set of cabinets instead of a 4x4 "walkin" (hint, what you have drawn for the pantry will hold about 1 set of shelves, because the door will occlude anything else).

Switch the direction of your master bedroom door too.

Now the kitchen. Why the peninsula on the back?

Kirkhall, sorry about the cross post in kitchen. I was encouraged by others to do so. With Lavender's suggestions, the master closet should be 9X7.

Lavender also helped me with the pantry too.

Laundry is the garage and we love it that way!

So instead of going back on GW last night, I got sucked into watching the Notebook (again). I have a love/hate relationship with that movie. I hate that I love it. Thank you for taking out the time to respond. I dream about kitchens at night and it really is wonderful to get some help. Microwave - looks like everyone agrees that a GE Spacesaver is the way to go. I agree. Now, where to place it? Should I keep the frig where I currently have it and put it next to there? Or should I have the frig where I have it in my proposed layout and keep it next to there (above the DW)? Someone told me I should keep the cabinet above the DW for dishes coming out of the DW. But it also makes sense to have the MW right next to the frig. Banquette - StacyLH - love the idea. That's what I thought of originally but changed my mind because a lot of people said it was uncomfortable. After reading the threads on them on GW, I guess the trick is to make sure to do the banquette right so it is comfortable. I will do another search on GW to see if there is any guidance on dimensions, material, etc. on it (I spent 30 minutes on it this morning but haven't had a chance to read all the threads on it). Stacylh, I actually love the photo you found of the banquette. It looks perfect my kitchen and it also looks comfortable. I also need to see if I can get DH on board with it.

I hear you. We just had a fence put in, and I want to stain it. A medium dark brown, without too much red, but not gray looking... I've got 5 quarts and three sample size stains, and so far nothing is exactly right.

I got something different each time I counted the squares, so I gave up)) Just posting another idea, assuming that you have 90" on the bedroom wall and 11' b/w the exterior wall and the laundry. I'm thinking 12" angled shelves b/w the exterior wall and the range and 6" open shelves for cutting boards on the other side. If o/h is 1" that would give you 47" b/w the peninsula and the exterior wall. The cab in the corner faces the laundry. On the peninsula, next to the corner open shelf for trays, cooking sheets, then drawers, I think the trash can be under the sink. You can have a 12" pull out for pantry storage next to the fridge, but it will probably be cheaper to have a broom closet there. On the other side, MW is on an upper shelf. I have pantry and a drop zone (hoping that door swing direction can be changed), where you now have the sink+DW.

I'm not sure about the scale, but I trust that you've taken measurements and everything you have in your diagram fits properly. With that said, I think I'd add an arm chair to each living area. Also a sideboard to the back wall of the dining room topped with art. It will be a nice thing to see upon entering the home. A console for the back of the sofa in the family room would be good also. I'm not sure the family room is the best place for a plant, since there doesn't appear to be any natural light. Also, what's that area next to the family room with the big circle in it? Do you have photos of the actual rooms you can post?

Looking like progress, possibly switch range and fridge, range should be close to sink so you dont have to carry pots with hot water as far. I am not sure zero overhead storage is a good idea, wonder if the kitchen can be redone to make use of the wall behind the master bath. Up to you though and what you want. I suppose you could light the countertops with pendants that way but you might be hurting on storage. Plus, you have to bend over every time you want something.

If it were me, I'd think about taking a back corner out of your WIC and recess the fridge into that wall, to try to have a shorter distance and less circuitous route between fridge and dining area. You can keep a small pantry area there (or have a "snack area"). You *could* make your bathroom slightly less deep, and put pantry cabinets all along the wall, after the new fridge location, for more kitchen storage.
