Did you prune it severely in fall or spring? This type of rose should not be pruned much unless in early summer after blooming. The canes have to go through winter in order to bloom.

Thank you michaelg for your reply. I did prune it in late winter. Cutting back 5 canes that were crossing. What type of rose is this and what care I have no idea ? I'm probably not giving it what it needs.

mad_gallica or someone will ID it for you. It's one of a group of yellow once-bloomers from China. It doesn't need much care. Just don't hack it down between midsummer and spring blooming time. Once-bloomers don't need as much water or fertilizer as other roses. They do need some winter chill.

Persian Yellow

Generally roses like this thrive on benign neglect. It doesn't need pruning according to fancy HT rules. My guess is that it will outgrow the space very quickly, and then you will have to either learn how to prune it to keep it a reasonable size, or move it to a larger location. It doesn't require much at all in the way of fertilizer, and probably less water than it is getting, but that isn't something I'd be familiar with. It isn't a rose that grows around here because it can't deal with eastern amounts of rain. It is a common 'found' rose in the Rockies and the colder, higher elevation parts of California.

I'm usually not at all comfortable with giving advice without knowing where the rose is. However, this one has a fairly restricted range where it thrives, so I'm just assuming you live there somewhere.

Thank you Mad_gallica for the information. I live in northern NV , outside Reno city limits area and it's where I have this rose planted. I do notice it is quickly out growing it's space. A new long sucker limb is laying flat on the ground not knowing if I should give this rose something to climb on with that happening. It mostly seems like a bush form as you mentioned Persian Yellow is , not a climber otherwise. Looked up Persian Yellow and it seems to be right for the one I may have. Appreciate your help very much in identifying for me.

Lee, Harison's Yellow is pretty common in your area, having been brought there by early settlers.

IMHO, the pictures don't look quite right for Harison's Yellow. The flower form is off, the leaves are off, and the plant habit is off. Every time I see a picture of Persian Yellow, the plant strikes me as very elegant. It's more like a double form of Father Hugo than any relation of Harison's Yellow. I've just never been able to drum up any affection for that one.
