Has anyone brought their Cannas out of their winter storage yet?
Comments (14)Since I have been procrastinating lately and just glancing at a sign stating "Plant cannas today"; that was about 2 weeks ago, maybe tomorrow. But this is what I tried last year: Since I have two cartonfuls of mixed cannas, Tropicana, Inferno, a shorter salmon pink type and yellow, layered with peatmoss and a few dahlias, calla lilies and elephant ear. Each canna was set into a large plastic baggie (freezer type) with some soil and watered lightly. They are lined up in the garage on a cardboard lid. When the weather begins to warm up I will bring them out for a couple hours and then back into the garage daily. It seems like much work but it is definitely worth it. And then they are planted into large containers, urns and into the garden as the weather is more canna-friendly. They are gorgeous and make me feel like I am in the Tropics!! Comments (10)Hey all, been a while! I started thinking about next years garden June 5th when we got hit with frost! Guess I wasn't paying close enough attention as I lost a lot stuff I was going to plant up. Then the balance of summer was rained out - I don't think we had one week without it raining at least once. Never watered a thing in my yard all summer. Then, and the most important reason I've been absent from here and my garden, is we now have a new little grandson to admire!!! Very exciting stuff! But my poor yard did suffer for it! Made a promise to it today as I was out (finally!) doing some clean up that I would take better care next year! And so my plans begin!! Need to extend a perennial bed to go in front of our new deck. Would like to put in some low scrubs (any suggestions?) Also cleared an area today at the back of the yard in the hopes of putting in a tree next spring! Would really like something that will give fall colour. Was reading the other thread about the Norway Maple "Prairie Splendor" - do you think it would be good here in Winnipeg? Other suggestions would be welcome. I love the fall and ours are so short - this years has been nonexistent! My Amur Maple is still green:( Trying to fill spaces with things that come to life when it starts to cool down. So looking forward to reading and seeing all that you've been up to this year and your hopes for next season! Cheers!...See MoreTime to Lift The Winter Protection In NE OHIO Yet?
Comments (19)Hydrangeasohio, does your detached garage go below freezing during winter? If the pots will not freeze inside, it should be OK. However, I just don't think that you will be happy with the end results if the hydrangeas stay in the pots for a number of years. They really are much happier in the ground. For this same reason, I gave up some of my hydrangeas and gave them to friends, simply because I didn't have the ground space and they were not happy in the pots over the years. They included some Kaleidoscope (oops, I can't even remember the name now!! Ouch...), Forever and Ever, Claudie etc. All I have left in the ground now are my Endless Summer, Annabelle, and a number of paniculatas! I love my Annabelle and the P's because they are so carefree and hardy. OK, they don't have the colors of the macrophylla's but then my philosophy of gardening is, if you need too much babying, you don't belong to my yard! LOL! So, to answer your question, I do NOT winter protect my hydrangeas....just too lazy to do so..... LOL...See MoreWinter Sowing - has anyone tried this yet?
Comments (9)Sandie, winter sowing veggies is great. I have done summer and winter squash, cabbage, collards, cukes, tomatoes, okra. You just have to make sure once they come up and it warms up to vent the tops of your containers and make sure they don't dry out. That will kill them before anything. If they get snow on them, that's OK...just ignore it, and when it is warm enough it will melt, and water them. It is an exciting adventure. Once you do it you will be hooked. I used to save containers all year to use for winter sowing. It is a good way to recycle just about any kind of container...you can even use a double layer of Saran wrap as a cover...just make sure you punch plenty of holes in any of your covers so when it rains it will soak in. Good luck...you still have plenty of time to winter sow....See Morechristine 5b
