I have a Spanish style home with a small porch and set these planter boxes on the ledges that I filled with cacti and succulents that have filled out nicely. I'm new to this site, and am sure that what I have planted aren't super exotic, but I like how these boxes are looking. I'm in the process of completely redoing my front yard landscaping, fully demoed and will begin planting all succulents, cacti and native plants this weekend.

The deep purple echeveria on the left is about to bloom.

When they are beautiful, they don't have to be exotic. The boxes will probably be exploding soon! Very nice job.

Send pics of your yard when it's done. I can only grow the hardies in my yard :-(

Do you know the ID of the goldish plant at the bottom of the 1st pic? I have it & don't know what it is. Will appreciate a response one way or the other. Everything looks healthy & fabulous!

I ordered seeds from cactusstore and am about to begin the process! I plan on using a heating mat and a CFL bulb in conjunction with window light. At the start of germination I'm going to cover the pots with baggies to maintain humidity. Questions I still have... -When do they start wanting the soil to dry out? -what temperature should I keep the heating pad? My apartment doesn't get below 68 F but since they are near a thin glass window they will get cooler then that. -how many seeds should I aim to put in a 3-4inch pot? I was going to mix a little sand into the seed bags and sow. The seeds I got are: 1) Cheiridopsis species mix (100) 2) Ophthalmophyllum praesectum (25) 3) Conophytum species mix (75) 4) Aloinopsis villetii (25) 5) Aloinopsis setifera (25) 6) Fenestraria aurantiaca (100) 7) Lithops species mix (200)

I would add depth to that bed across the front of the house. straighten the curves and only have them where needed to allow space for a wider plant such as the palm. As is it is adding to mowing difficulty, but not adding to the aesthetics. Set the edging bloom into the soil as a mowing strip and use a brief solid edging to keep grass from growing into the bed. The current arrangement will require a lot of trimming of grass and removal of grass that tries to creep into the bed. I would move the palm further from the wall. It is already just about touching the wall which will shred the leaf when it happens during wind. I don't know anything about this particular plant, but plants do grow, so look up on a reliable source the 10 year size, add a couple of feet to allow you to do things like paint the building behind the plant, and then replant. This may require an outward curve of the bed edge, but there will be a logical reason for it. Long sweeping curves look better than wiggles. For the bed next to the walk, if you will be replacing and widening it in the next five years or so, I wouldn't put a lot of money into it. 4' isn't widen enough for the vast majority of shrubs. They grow and then will start crowding the already narrow walk, not a welcoming look for visitors. Look for a billowy but not wide perennial. If it were mine, I would instead be more likely to leave most of the plants that are already there, just removing those at either end. Set down a concrete tile at ground level and add a tall pot at each end with some plants with bright flowers or leaves.

Great choices and nicely planted boxes! It's so rewarding when they fill in so vigorously.

Tabb, I think the golden succulent is either a graptopetalum or a graptosedum. I'm leaning towards the latter. That sunrise color is gorgeous.

Thanks for getting that info back . It was helpful. I trade my extras often so let me know if you ever want to talk succulents. The weather in some places is already cold but I'm in South Louisiana & we have another month before temps are an issue. Be Blessed, Trudy

I can always talk succulents. Let's definitely touch base in spring. I'm currently filling a large greenhouse and already have ideas of what would be extremely happy for a chance in Louisiana. It's such a beautiful state. I grew up in Fort Polk/ Alexandria.

Oh, and I've found the graptos to do perfectly fine outdoors in winter here, where it is a little colder in winter (8b) than there, surviving temps below 32 overnight (19F as low for this past winter). Might be worth a little experimentation with a small planting in case you tend to drag most plants in and out all winter like me :)

We can get back in Spring as I have more than enough that I'll have to give TLC to in Dec. thru March. They are under a covered patio on the South side of my house so usually I just throw old sheets over them. Thank God I have an enclosed garage that they call home when temps drop below 35*. Last year we dropped to mid 20's so they stayed a couple of weeks on that visit. Ha Ha!
