I have one tomato plant this year, early girl variety. Harvested about 35 so far, still has 17+ green 'maters waiting to ripen on plant. Picked two today that looked great until I saw bottom. None of the others had this. They were not in contact with soil. Bruising is on bottom only.. Tannish gray color. Not moist or wet, hardly indented. Not any softer than rest of the fruit either..

What is it? Still edible? Thanks!!

That's a rather early stage of blossom end rot (BER).

I picked four tomatoes since these two, and they didn't have any bruising or damage. With BER, do all the tomatoes end up "infected"? Also, would these two with the visible damage still be edible since you say it is an early stage of BER? Thanks!

The Bush Early Girl I had last year was a Potato Leaf Then it wasn't a Bush Early Girl, sorry. ;) Best Boy has alternate seed sources if you want it for some reason. Brandy Boy, no, except several reported it on the store Burpee seed racks last year. I have to order them from Burpee because I have so many requests for the plants but once this supply of seeds I ordered last year is gone, no more. And nothing else has been ordered by me from Burpee for many years. As already mentioned there are many better tomato varieties available than any of those and from better tomato seed vendors and at much cheaper prices too. Dave

This is my first garden (in its first year). Based in lafayette east bay hills. Grew so many EG plants without paying attention to "dry farming" etc. Now I am getting poor flavor compared to the EGs I can buy at Berkeley Bowl. Today I reduced my watering timer. Hopefully flavor will improve. Next year I will plan better. PS: I thought something was wrong with my seed variety (but I am wrong ... now that I know about the fact that flavor comes from "dry farming" and low watering). I am afraid it may take me several years before I can tune in the flavor. In the meantime I will look for alternate comparable flavor varieties which will grow under normal regular drip irrigation conditions.

I hate to be a negative ninny, but that size container would not work for two tomato plants for me. I have 10 tomato plants in pots right now they are producing but the biggest part of the harvest has already taken place. I even called my favorite nursery the other day to ask what size pots to plant two Pentas in and they told me a 24 inch pot so apparently they think the bigger the pot the better. Here and the south Texas I would be watering that pot three or four times every day

Looks fine to me. Those are the leaf stems rather than the plant stems. Like any other plants, individual cultivars of tomatoes may have particular leaf shapes or growth patterns. Early Girl is indeterminate, one of the types of plants that grows tall, in my garden reaching something like 6’ over the course of the growing season.

Not an infection. Instead, it's a water shortage during development. So, no, not all tomatoes on that plant will be affected as long as the water status of the soil is suitable -- evenly moist is the key.

When you cut the affected tomatoes, you will discover if the damage is only skin deep or not. At that time, trim off the bad stuff and eat the rest. Enjoy!
