How early in winter can I root prune fig trees

Hello All -

I typically plan for root pruning at the earliest (not often) in mid February or mid March just before bud swell depending on how cold the winter is in the St Louis area.

How early could I do the pruning? Could it be done in December on a warmer day that we sometimes get or would that put the plant in danger of dying due to cutting off roots with stored energy too early (~ 2-3 months) before warmer temperatures and leaf out? I would be planning the removal of all of soil and pruning the are rooted tree.

Thanks for any advice.

Brian
