Wanting to get into machine embroidery

C F

I have a very basic Singer sewing machine and am pretty competent at doing all that I need to do on it. (No clothes, mostly repairs to things and small home projects, like curtains and pillows).

I am a monogram fanatic and am interested in buying a machine to embroider my own monograms. I really don't know where to start, and I am afraid to go into the store expecting to pay one price and learn that these things cost like $5000 for a good machine.

I want to do exclusively monograms-- no need for software with lots of images or borders or things like that. I probably won't monogram anything larger than 6" tall. Does anyone have any basic guidance on buying one of these machines? What should I expect to spend? I feel like I know several people who have bought them and then never actually used them.
