Newly sodded Bermuda Celebration mistake!
Comments (6)Lou, St. Augustine grass dominates the landscape in Miami in case you didn't know that. Every where you go you see it. For the OP to use a different grass, is to think outside the box - and I commend him/her for that. I lived in Miami for 13 years and hate it the grass there. I know very well it can handle the Florida shade better than any other warm season grass, but that doesn't make it pretty. It's the ugliest grass on the market today. You probably have it and that's why you took offense in my comments, but that's your problem. I think is a pretty dumb thing to say to somebody that because they don't like a particular grass or the grass that YOU like, they are dumb for saying it... Comments (4)Bermuda grass grows best at lower heights than cool season grasses, 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches versus the 3 to 4 inches those of use with Blue Grass or Perennial Rye would mow to. Check with the people at your state universities Cooperative Extension Service for more help in controlling "weeds" and be sure you tell them you prefer organic, or environmentally responsible, methods. Perhaps this link may be of some help as well. http://publications.tamu.edu/TURF_LANDSCAPE/PUB_turf_Maintaining%20Bermudagrass%20Lawns.pdf kimmq is kimmsr...See MoreBermuda Lawn Care advice needed
Comments (17)Hi mkbobba. I live in Holly Springs so I can tell you a little bit about brands and where to get them. You're extremely close on being late for pre-emergents. October has been fairly warm with the exception of the last couple of days so that plays in your favor. You really need to put it down now. I have used both dimension and stonewall with similar results. I use Lesco products and they sell a 0-0-7 dimension at home depot and at John Deere Landscapes. JDL also sells stonewall if you want to go that route. There is a JDL off of 64 like you're going to Jordan Lake. It's about 10 minutes from the Beever Creek shopping center. That is also where I get my fertilizer. They'll recommend a 24-0-11 with iron which I have never tried so I don't know how well it works. I used a 32-0-8 with iron and had GREAT success this year. To answer some of your questions, it is too late to fertilize. You'll want to put down a pre-emergent but nothing with nitrogen in it. That is the first number on a bag of fertilizer. You could probably put down an organic if you like. You could use milorganite or put down alfalfa pellets or cracked corn. I like to use one of the latter 2 at this time of year and again in the spring when the grass is about to come out of dormancy. I wouldn't overseed. Once your bermuda gets growing, it will fill in. Don't waste your time. I'm not a soil expert so I couldn't tell you anything about what sort of lime to apply. I've never applied it and I've never taken a soil test. Below are some pictures of my yard from this summer. Let me know if you have any questions about where to get what....See MoreBermuda Grass Care Question
Comments (30)5 days ago Today I haven't added the pre emergent yet but I did add the iron stuff 5 days ago. I did water lightly that day to activate the pellets but turned off sprinkler system after that all week. I was watering twice a day on odd days. I can see an improvement and this weekend I should get rain so I'll see how it looks next week....See MoreJohn Douglas
