I have Monarch & Black Swallowtail Cats . . Finally
Comments (5)Congrats Mary! Especially the Black Swallowtail cats. They seem to be at a premium this year. I gave up on the BSTs and ordered some from Edith. I've only seen two really early this year, and none since. Today I had Monarchs in my yard for the first time since I released the ones I raised. And I had a big, beautiful Cloudless sulphur hanging out around the garden. I don't know if there are any eggs, been too busy to check. Tomorrow I fly to Kentucky to see my two grandsons. I'm looking forward to the trip. Butterflies will have to wait until I get back home. A friend is cat sitting. ; ) Sandy...See MoreWhat's Happening in There
Comments (4)Well, if you really want to get that technical I would suggest that enzymes are playing a huge role in the morphing phase. This is one of the most fascinating creatures on earth, as it goes through such dramatic changes, it is even in Greek Mythology... Frogs are the only other animal I can think of that go through such a change, also in Greek writings.. So study frogs and butterflies, Greek writeups? It's like walking into a library...you cna pick a book off the shelf for the general public, or you can go into the reference room, where books are not allowed to leave...;)...See MoreFinally monarch cats two days ago
Comments (2)Sadly, keeping a constant eye out this season I only spotted one cat on my very large milkweed. Happily, however, my 10+ seedling A. tuberosas have done quite nicely and should provide a bunch more foliage next season. Also happily, in the last week or so there has been a constant flow of Monarchs going through the yard, heading your way, dbarron! Seems much better than last year....See MoreAfter a 5 year Monarch cat drought, they're baaaaccckkkk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Comments (9)I have a lot of showy Milkweed and haven't seen 1 cat yet. I'm sure people seeing me think I'm looking for gold or something out in my patch. I'm hoping there are some cats in the middle of the bed. But congrats on yours! For some reason, I've seen far less Monarchs and Swallowtails this year. Last year I had dozens of Swallowtails. The only Monarch cat I saw last year was in October--can they winter over? The showy Milkweed is native here, but I also planted some 'Cinderella' Butterfly Weed that I have to baby more. I hope it spreads. I planted it before and it died....See Moretruton
