white corian/solid surface--I am crazy?
Comments (65)My countertops are solid surface that isn't as thick as Corian, but is the same kind of material. It may be a local name because when I google it, the fabricator I used is the only one that comes up under that name. I used this material because they had a blue that I liked . . . I didn't really like the Corian blues, and in my color scheme -- cream cabinets, yellow walls, blue counters -- it was important to me to get the blue color right. My integrated sink is a lighter blue, speckled. The integrated sink is one of the things I like best . . . absolutely NO place for yucch to collect. It almost never looks dirty, but when it gets stained, a quick swish with soft scrub does the job. To solve the problem of not being able to set hot pans on the countertop, I had the area next to the stove inset with tile the same color as the cabinets. I also have one long serving counter done in the same tile so the area by the stove doesn't look out of place. It has worked perfectly . . . I'm thinking my next kitchen will have the same thing. I've liked my solid surface counters a lot. My make-up table is the same product in matte white. I get lipstick and other makeup on it regularly, and just soft-scrub and it comes off. You know the pitfalls -- you may be cleaning more often -- but if you love the look, it will be worth it....See MoreAm I crazy to start a kitchen remodel in my situation?
Comments (21)Ha, This is funny to me...All I have to say is...Darn baby gates! Allow me to explain - We have a 2.75yr old and a 6 month old. The plan was to get the kitchen done before the new baby came, but we planned, and planned, and planned, so long that he beat us to it. He was born in July and once I was over my postpartum recovery, we got back to kitchen. DH slowly started to demo the kitchen, doing some plumbing and electrical, leaving the major appliances intact as long as possible. Then the day came that we had to tear out the rest to get to the final bit of plumbing. Drywallers finished in November and we were all jazzed to get those cabinets in. WELL, one thing after another happened, winter colds with the kids, that previously booked vacation we had to take (glad we did!), then DH caught the flu or something, etc. All this with just a temporary kitchen (microwave, crock pot, frig, sink in the laundry room, and eating out A LOT). Just as DH was starting to feel better, I was on the demo'd side of the kitchen messing with paint chips and granite samples when I decided to step over the baby gate we had put up to keep my toddler out of there. My feet got all tangled up in the gate, my hands were full (luckily not with Baby), and Tiiiiiimmmber! I fell, slamming my shoulder into the wall, and broke my arm. Cut to 3 weeks later and here I am just starting to feel well enough to handle the kids on my own so DH can get back to working on the kitchen. Is there a point to my story?...Not really. Well, maybe it is to always walk AROUND the baby gate, NOT over! (painful lesson to learn). Actually my point is, with all that, we are surviving. Toddlers eat fairly simple foods and babies are even easier in the food department. The baby is sleeping through the night (knock on wood) so that does help. DH and I are tired of eating out, but we'll get through it (even if it is taking twice as long to lose some of that baby weight!). We debated waiting until the kids were older, but we just wanted to get the remodeling done so we could enjoy our kids and the home for years to come. My advice would be as everyone else said...Make all the decisions you can before you start demo. You don't want to be mid-remodel and still debating granite choices like me...and watch out for those baby gates!! Best of luck to you with whatever you decide....See MoreCan I paint my kitchen cabinets a brighter white than my trim?
Comments (2)Well you can, but if the paint police find out, I’ll disavow any knowledge of it ;-) You’re not really looking for a “brighter white,” you’re looking for a tile and paint combination with similar undertones. White Dove is a yellow white. If the tile you love makes this apparent, try a white with cooler undertones. Chantilly Lace is beautiful, and much cooler than the White Dove. It might be a great choice. White Dove Chantilly Lace...See MoreIs it crazy to paint these Kitchen cabinets white?
Comments (9)Changing the countertops would be money down the drain. Besides, it’s incredibly wasteful to trash a non-renewable resource for, really, no good reason. As for painting the wood, which is a completely renewable resource, while you probably won’t recoup any of the money spent there either, you would get the pleasure of having white cabinets, which you find to be soothing, so there is that value. But it will cost thousands to do it right, and, at the end of the day, you'll still have the same kitchen. Your countertops are beautiful, btw. Some things that would actually add value to the kitchen and/or improve the functionality? Better lighting (undercabinet and recessed) Maybe a bigger sink and a new faucet Adding pullout storage to the lower cabinets Upgrading door hinges and drawer slides Counterdepth fridge...See Moreanitamo
