white fuzzy insect stuff on my apple trees
Comments (6)I had a Cox's Orange killed by them, relying on the advice out there that "they are no big deal." It took a couple of years, but they damaged all the tree's bark so much it just finally croaked. Blasting water works a little, but there is white fuzz back within a week, AND you have to hold the branch to effectively blast them off, so once a tree gets so big, that's pretty much a useless task. I now have them again on the one tree I didn't buy on M111, so I assume it will eventually die too, because they are impossible to effectively control. All my M111 trees are barely affected, so that is the only solution, IMO. Carla in Sac...See MoreWhat is this white, fuzzy, sticky stuff on my Olive Tree?
Comments (4)Thanks David, I took some sample cuttings down to my local nursery, and they identified it as Wooly Aphids. I think I caught it early enough and I've given the tree a good washing. I'll wait and see......See MoreWhite webs stuff on my tree
Comments (1)I think you have spider mites. But if you posted a pic would prob help. You posted way back in Dec and hope you found the solution back then. It's neem oil. I have a recipe that really works. Adjust the amounts to the size of the tree. I'd spray any plants you have immediately next to it. 1 pint very hot water 1 pint rubbing alcohol 1 tsp pure, cold-pressed neem oil 1/2 tsp MurphyâÂÂs Oil Soap In a 1 qt spritzer, mix the neem with the soap & hot water. Shake well. Add the alcohol & shake again. Shake regularly to keep the mixture emulsified as you spritz the plant, making sure as you spritz that you are covering all the vegetative surfaces, especially the underside of leaves and leaf/branch crotches. Use all the mix same day or discard. Use only pure, cold-pressed neem oil, such as that packaged by Dyna-Gro. Other methods of oil extraction limit the effectiveness of the active ingredient in neem oil Good luck!...See MoreWhat's this white stuff on my mulberry tree?
Comments (12)It's a scale infestation and a pretty severe one at that. Mulberries are prone to various types of scale, which are prolific, sucking insects that deplete plant vigor by feeding on internal fluids and juices. This looks like white peach scale (Pseudaulacaspis pentagona, aka mulberry scale). Control is difficult as the scale is armored so relatively immune to contact pesticides unless very carefully timed. A systemic may be your best bet but even they are only moderately effective and you may need repeat applications. You may want to check with your county extension service for their recommendations. And this is an extension fact sheet discussing the scale: white peach scale....See MoreDave in NoVA • N. Virginia • zone 7A
