we can't get price from granite place -- only fabricator gets that so we have no way of knowing labor costs...only total price they want to be paid...

we asked for estimates for 7 slabs--varying price points I think and 3 different granite sellers...only price back so far was for 1 slab of Taj Mahal...and the fabricators had the slab Info for 10 days...so I am hacked about their lack of interest and I am also hacked about our cabinet person who I think dropped the ball as well.

A fair price depends on the rarity and desirability of the sheet. Some exotics could be $150.00 per square foot. You can get granite at Home Depot for $44.00 psf installed. Somewhere in between.

Are you having to buy (pay for) the whole slab to get those two tops.

I just got a quote from the granite guy that I've used twice before. My cost for a 78" long double vanity slab quite similar to yours, using a high quality piece of granite from their remainder stock, was $800.

I'm not clear on whether you're saying the price is 4K for a 5' vanity ... or 4K more than the other options for a 5' vanity.

Regardless, it's excessive. You're talking about the stone for a bathroom vanity (not even the sinks or plumbing) that will cost as much as a semester of college tuition. I'd make another choice altogether.

Just ask for a credit on the countertops you contracted for and shop the countertop install yourself from whomever you want.

Change orders cost money; and pricing increase is not always a linear equation. There are opportunity and commodity costs that figure into a business' overhead and ultimately prices. Just because you contracted for one item or scope of work doesn't guarantee you the same pricing structure or calculation on a change to that orig. scope.

You need decide whether the new scope and pricing is acceptable and of value to you and not worry about whether it's "fair" or not. Go with your original deal or if you think the value lacking on the new proposal - ask to back out of that portion if you can.

cpartist, good question! I think we are looking at $40k+ per year for college tuition alone. Another question for MrsPete ... how can anyone judge what is excessive for another person? We all have different budgets and what we feel is worth spending money on, so one person's excessive is another person's basic starting point.

4 grand will get you a semesters worth of tuition at many state universities for in state residents. 4k for outa staters and Yale-ies should cover your meal plans. So there is something for all budgets , just like countertops..

It seems to me that you want to know what others have paid for a slab of Taj Mahal so you can compare. A few people have used Taj and other quartzites in their kitchens, so you could ask there. Kitchens gets a lot more traffic than Baths.

Is Taj Mahal quartzite exclusively for Home Depot? I found a color of Cambria quartz (Hawkridge), but it is only made exclusively for Home Depot and you cannot buy it from anyone else. Weird.

It's not weird; it's the leverage you have when you sell Cambria by the train car load. You sell enough and Cambria will make an exclusive color for you too.

There's a Corian sink that only available at HD also.
