How do you kill invasive weeds with underground root feeders?
Comments (4)Thankyou... I actually care for my neighbors home too...And because I don't always have the time like my yard, God these vines are every where. They are choking their bushes, crawling up their foundation, overtaking their grass, crawling up the fence, and now spreading into my gardens. If you pull up a baby, no roots come up..I will take a pic of them. They grow these weird looking bean pods and they tangle and choke everything they climb on. Now they are mixing in with my honeysuckel vines..ARG...See MoreWinter/Spring weeds that spread by rhizomes
Comments (6)The only weed I can think of with somewhat sword shaped leaves and spreads by rhizomes, as well as seeds, is what's commonly called 'Widow's tears' also known as Spiderwort (of which there are good garden cultivars), but their blooms are blue; although some are very light blue. Could that be it? If so I've been temped to leave them in the garden too, but they do want to take over. Here is a link that might be useful: Could it be these? Comments (7)when you hit the wall ... one option is to build a nursery bed... or use the veg patch late in the fall .. remove all your perennials.. bare rooting and removing the invaders... plant in the nursery ... and go at the evil weed patch in your preferred method.. personally.. i would round up it all ... then come spring.. move the plants back to the bed.. if you feel you have destroyed the bad stuff ... if you want to learn how to use RU ... start a post in the perennial forum.. appropriately titled ... do harvest seed from the reseeders this fall .. if you need to know how to do that.. new post in the annual forum ... i think you really need to mulch ... and you can do that.. and have the reseeders... if you limit the spaces for such .... in other words.. reduce you unmulched soil to a min.. so you can reduce the areas that will need weeding ... another alternative.. is to harvest seed.. and start them in flats ... and move them into the mulch as young plants in early spring ... check out the winter sowing forum ... ken...See MoreHow to use cardboard as a weed barrier in existing flower beds?
Comments (18)floral_uk z8/9 SW UK - What an ID to type out! :) Thank you. My husband had already planted a few things - raspberry bush, blueberry busy, Gladiolas and another flowering plant (don't recall the name), and there were three small Hostas that reappeared as well. I could of course wait till when the Glaiolas stop blooming to dig them up and put away the bulbs for winter, then do as you suggested. I do agree with your method but not sure how easy it would be to do it with all these plants in there already. The flower bed kind of starts from the lawn and is surrounded by a stone wall/border as it curves and then meets the grass again at the other end. I will try to post a photo shortly. kimmq - Thank you for your input! I noticed the plastic runners on the edges of a few vertical (ish) flower beds on hillsides, or curbs and wondered why they had been used. Now I know I guess :)...See MoreJean
