Common Milkweed Diseased? PLEASE HELP!

I have raised Monarchs for close to 20 years. This year my Common Milkweed has some severe issues and I am hoping for some guidance in diagnosing the problem. My entire bed of Milkweed is affected.

This is ONE SINGLE plant that started sending shoots up from almost every node. The base is to the left.

This is a close up of the same plant showing the sickly leaves that are severely thinned.

This is showing a sick leaf from my patch compared to a healthy leaf from a plant in a different location in my garden.

I should point out that all of the plants started out looking normal and healthy, but are now sickly and have the thinned leaves. Also, every baby plant that has shot up is sick right from the beginning and never grow normally.

Please help! I have spent hours researching this, but have found very little. I have my own thoughts but I do not have a lot of background in plant pathology, so I am hoping someone out there can help or has experienced a similar problem.

I've no idea as to the cause but it does look severe. Bless your heart, I'd be terribly upset too. Has anything around your MW bed changed? It has been terribly hot and dry in my area. Do you normally water this bed? If not, perhaps the plants are heat stressed. I can't tell from your id where you are located so I may be totally off base with weather conditions. I live in central Arkansas and we've been experiencing a very hot, dry summer, causing me to water my milkweed every day. The single plant with the leaf node growth is shocking to see. If heat stressed, I'd think the plant would slow down the growth.

I have seen the thin leaves on some of my Common MW earlier in the season, after the hot dry conditions began. Once I began watering each day, the newer leaf growth above the thinned leaves returned to normal. My baby plants are all healthy. It might not have anything to do with the watering and I might have the first signs of whatever it is you are experiencing. I will follow this thread with great interest.

I just did some digging and found this article. It sounds like some of the conditions you are experiencing, especially the witches broom condition (could this be your heavy leaf node growth off of one stalk?) I may have the same conditions beginning in my garden and if so, is spread by leaf sucking insects like leaf hoppers.

Milkweed vine? Are you talking about honeyvine, Cynanchum laeve? It grows invasively in my yard, so I never grow it in a pot. According to the literature, it can have a tap root up to 2 meters. So it may not be happy in a pot. It is an agricultural pest and can be a pain in the yard. From an abstract; Laboratory and field experiments were conducted to describe the root system of honeyvine milkweed [Cynanchum laeve (Michx.) Pers.], and to study factors affecting the growth of plants from root fragments of shallow, ascending roots. The root system of a typical plant was composed of lateral roots radiating from a sparsely-branched, vertical taproot. Laterals tended to concentrate in a boundary area between a loamy surface soil and a zone of clay accumulation, this boundary area being below the zone of cultivation. Vertical taproots were found to a depth of 2 m, with sections collected at this and shallower depths demonstrating the ability to produce aerial shoots. In laboratory studies, root sections were killed either by freezing for 2 h or by drying at either 20 or 30 C for 24 h. The optimum temperature for shoot development from root sections was between 20 and 30 C. Shoot emergence and growth from buried root sections were generally unaffected by either depth of planting or root length. As many as 45 daughter shoots were produced from a single plant originating from seed, and 27 daughter shoots were developed from a root section 131 days after planting. The maximum distance daughter shoots were observed from original plants 131 days after planting was 111 cm.

I want to bump this up again so those who are interested in preserving this plant can add this year's growing information. I had a baby who bloomed this spring but no seed pods. The same with the wild A variegata I dug up three seasons ago. This year it put up four strong stalks and lots of flower heads but again, not one seed pod. I watched the flower heads closely and even though some flying insects crawled all over the flowers, there was no pollination. This particuliar milkweed appears to bloom the earliest of all the milkweeds I have. Maybe there aren't enough insects around this early to aid in the pollination. We had terrible high temps over a long period this summer and it was all I could do to keep the plants alive. Did anyone else have any luck getting seed pods of this plant? I also purchased three small A variegata plants from Pine Ridge Gardens this year (all MaryAnn would sell me as I suspect she was trying to make them available to more of her clients). I'm going to overwinter them in 1 gal nursery pots. I haven't decided if I'm going to try growing them in big planters on my deck next year (mostly high dappled shade) or plant them inground. Maybe I should try putting one in ground this fall and keeping two in the nursery pots over winter. Disease common to heuchera?

Thanks for replying Gardengal, We have had some very hot weather followed by severe thunderstorms at least once a week. The rainfall has been very heavy and leaves standing water in many of the low areas of my yard. The Heuchera's are all over 1 year old and were very large, around 18" in diameter. The bed that this is in is a raised bed so does get ample drainage except for lately since the ground is saturated all over. I water only when the soil is dry so I can't give you an exact timeline. It is a mulched bed and we have had mushrooms sprouting everywhere. It receives dappled sunlight and is placed under a high canopy of oak and maples. This is a light shade garden. I suspect there is some type of fungal problem besides the shrooms and removed all the debris from around the base of the heuchera affected and the others nearby and also pruned any foliage that was laying on the ground to allow for ventillation. The rains have truly drenched our property and even the raised beds are taking quite some time to dry out. Do you think I should apply a fungicide to the bed? One heucherella planted nearby started showing some similar symptoms on the side the KL Heuchera was planted. Also trimmed off the affected leaves to minimize further damage. Thanks for your input. I really love my heucheras and hate to see any of them not doing well.

As I mentioned in your duplicate thread, spinosad is supposed to kill thrips. The silver/white patches are the thrip feeding damage. The black specks are their feces. Only thrips leave damage like that. You may have aphids as well. If you see bugs like this (hopefully, your infestation is not as heavy as the pic shows) that are either peach colored as shown or light green, you also have aphids. Little white specks are usually the shed skins they leave behind as they grow. Aphids can be knocked off of a plant with a vigorous stream of water. Then you can spray spinosad for the thrips. Aphids can cause leaf curling and yellowing. And as Dave points out, your plants also likely have some nutritional issues. Are you fertilizing them? And obviously, as you had already planned, they need to be moved out of those pots. Those look like peat or paper pots, too, and if they are, that could be responsible for a lot of the water/nutrition issues that are evident. As for whether to return them or not, that's your call. They're already fruiting, and could potentially give you a decent amount of production if you fix their growing conditions and they haven't contracted a disease from the thrips. Personally, it would depend on their variety for me (fruit worth the effort or just middling-tasting standard red hybrids?) and whether or not I could keep them at a distance from my other tomato plants for a while while I try to fix the pest issues.

Thank you for your comments. I live in Northwestern Ohio near the Michigan border. We have actually had a lot of rain and flooding this year, but the condition started to happen at the end of the season last year as well. The bed is watered by an automatic sprinkler which is controlled by a rain gauge. So, I do not think it has anything to do with watering.

mary_litterocker, I also read that article when I began my search and also came to the conclusion it was suffering from witches broom growth. Thank you for digging around. I am hoping for some more in depth information. There seems to be very little out there because Common Milkweed is considered an aggressive growing weed and most people want to get rid of it rather than heal it. It is sad, and one of the many reasons why Monarch's are suffering.

Right now I have to go and get my milkweed from fields. My daughter and I drive around searching for good clumps of milkweed for our 50 caterpillars. Hopefully I can get my bed back in good order next year. I am in the process of cutting all the sick plants down, but it is slow going because the Monarch's are still laying eggs on it. So, I need to carefully check each plant once I cut it down.

Thank you again for you help and if I ever so find a clear answer I will post. But, I am leaning toward the Milkweed Mosaic Virus spread by the leafhopper right now.

I've never seen that happen before. I'd wonder whether some other plant took over my milkweed patch.

I grew up in Toledo about a mile south of the border. Was always easy finding milkweed in Michigan but that was in the '70s. The fields where I got milkweed in Toledo are long gone.
