Master Bathroom + Closet

Heya.

I am trying to decide the most efficient (small) layout for my master bathroom and closet. The bedroom entrance needs to stay where it is at, but the bathroom and closet entrance can be anywhere on the wall shown. I originally had the master closet entrance inside the bathroom but I thought that was a waste of space. I'd like to keep the bathroom on the outside of the house wall to use the window light. Besides that I may decide to make it all one large room, but I prefer to keep clothes away from humidity, but with the way I have it set up it is an awkward closet. If I orient the bathroom utilities on the long wall, I can probably sacrifice a foot or two of the bedroom so it's less cramped.

You're not going to have much hanging space. You need to figure on 24" of depth for hanging clothes. Going in the door, the area to the right will be fine. On the left, you can't hang clothes right in front of the door, so you'll lose some space there- 2-3 feet depending how skinny/claustrophobic you are. Once you get in, you'll only have 21" of space to stand and look through your clothes- tight. You have enough room for a standard small 5 X 8 bathroom, with the tub/shower straight ahead past the sink and toilet. You'll only have a small vanity, though. The result would be a closet 7' wide by 8' long, with full hanging space on both sides.

I'm not sure what that door across from the vanity goes to? Linen closet? There's plenty of room for linens in the closet. Think vertically; most people don't effectively use the upper reaches of their closets. They have various swing-down closet rods to double the hanging space without having to climb a ladder.

Are you saying you have the whole space of both 'rooms' available to divide into MBA and Closet? (12 X 22?) You're OK moving the plumbing over? Do you want a tub and shower? Two sinks? Linen closet in the bathroom?

Looks like you want the MBA on the right, where there are two windows.

Add me to the list of people with layout #2: closets off bathroom, in the past 2 houses with no steam/humidity problem. I like the setup because it works well for getting ready without disturbing the spouse. A small tweak I'd recommend on the laundry room: put the washer and dryer on the back wall (straight ahead as you walk through the door). That gives you more space in front of the appliances to put stuff in and out, instead of your butt hitting the wall when bending down over a laundry basket.

Easiest seems like it would be to demo the bathroom wall and extend the vanity all the way to the window. Are there any restrictions? Like are you willing to move the toilet and baseboard heat? Change windows? Do you need a bigger shower? More closet space?

The original plan had a half bath that split the large master closet. I wanted a bigger closet area, so I just eliminated the half bath. I wanted to add the door to the hall so it would be a straight shot to the laundry room. Footers are poured, so the exterior is set, but I could still change the layout of the bathroom, but I feel like there’s not many good options. Hindsight is 20/20

Thanks Partim. Unfortunately I don’t think any of those spaces would work for more closets. One would take up space we need for nightstands and walking around the bed, one would block slider access although I wish we could use that wasted space!!!, and the other is where we have our dresser and mirror. I should have added furniture. Thanks though! And I think with revised option 1, we would get lots of extra closet space. Check it out and see what you think! Thanks!

Sorry, I am saying the whole space of closet and bath to the left of the bedroom are available. It's essentially 8' 4" x 12' 3" at the moment. I could squeeze it into 9' or 9'4" wide if needed. I want a decent sized one bowl vanity which is why I have this design in terms of a small 5x8 bath that sticks the tub on the far wall. The linen closet is a result of making that space functional for both rooms without wasting it away to a deep pocket in the closet. That space can also be turned into the entrance to the closet, but then I still have a tight spot for clothes.

I am willing to move plumbing around but I want to keep the bathroom fixtures towards the wall they are at now that has a window.

(Thinking out loud) I wonder why they don't make some kind of closet rod that hangs the clothes on an angle, so a closet doesn't need to be 24" deep? Or just twist the tops of the hangers? I might have just given myself an idea.....

That would require some clothes to be hanging further out if you tilt the rod at an angle...the option to just twist the tops of the hanger would mean pre-formed slots for them to balance in. Clever idea, just patent it now. I am not sure how the two rooms could be joined to benefit on space or layout. Any suggestions? Is changing my vanity to a 3' size the only other option to move the shower over to the back of the bathroom?

mdln, I came up with that but I feel like it would be an awkward bath area and narrow... The shower entrance would be tight.

Sorry, I do not know the widths. They look to be about twice the length of the toilet; so toilet = 28" x 2 = 56" = 4.5' - so my best guess ~5'

Wondering..is it beneficial to have the bathroom like that or have the closet an awkward size and bath be more spread out?

Looks like I will keep my layout, and if anything I will pick the long and narrow layout with just a large bifold door closet for the bedroom. I don't like the option of squaring off the bathroom to have a square closet to walk into.

Is there any reason having the right portion of closet as you walk in as a his section and the back portion as a hers section wouldn't work? It would mean less space is being used, but I could use the layout I have that way and keep plumbing tighter together.
