Ceiling Height - An 'unexpected' decision to make
Comments (7)Thanks florantha - the ceiling is definitely slanted in one direction. From the dining room (highest) down to the double window by the driveway (lowest). Actually - what you said did give me a thought: Can I put a little soffit JUST on that one wall - so that the cabinetry does reach the ceiling. IF I'm imagining it correctly, I think it would look ok. And I could go ahead with my plan to put a pendant there. And no - I'm sure that the valance (which is on order) will NOT look anything like what I drew. I just made it scallopy so that it would be sort of obvious that it was a valance!! I'm positive that's NOT what we're getting. Not only would it be out-of-fashion, it would definitely NOT fit with the rest of the cabinets or kitchen. I definitely do appreciate your saying that though. I think I'm going to see how it looks (the valance I mean - and assuming I can work out the whole going to the ceiling thing) and if I don't feel it's done well, we'll figure out how to make it right. Comments (17)If you are really sensitive to "symmetry" then you will have a visual problem. But once this is finished and you have other elements in the overall space, I think you will feel fine. Of course, a personal decision. But design-wise, simple panels that match your doors would make a good visual solution, just depends on your cost limitations....See MoreCeiling height cabinets in kitchen- which ones should be glass front?
Comments (9)I mixed it up. I put my bowls, fiesta ware and all our glassware in glass front cabinets on one wall and keep my spices in closed cabinets on either side of the cooktop and the dog's stuff in a closed cabinet next to the glass ones. However, I didn't do grids in the upper cabinets as I felt that would get too busy. Here's mine. The cabinet to the right of the glass ones is for the dog's stuff. I also have a drawer to the left of my cleanup sink on the island that stores our everyday dishes. They are also fiesta ware but they are a color I'm not fond of so the pretty colors go in the glass cabinet and the ugly color goes in the drawer for everyday use.And here you can see the cooktop side with it all closed up including the uppers....See More12 Foot Ceiling Cabinets? Comments (13)We did it there because the original cabinets were above the window. (There was a water event from above that damaged them.) We tried to make it look as though these could also be original. For yours, I think your uppers need to be a bit taller for better proportion. We tried to use overscale elements wherever possible because the ceiling was so tall. The existing cove molding was huge too! The section that had to be replaced because of damage had to be custom created. This may be repeating some of the above. ,If so I apologize. I also would have the short uppers go all the way around the room, as a single horizontal design element. Your mantle area needs work as it isn’t deep enough to be functional as a capture area. Not enough drawers, and the island protruding past the perimeter would be a no go for me. The longest that a slab of stone that’s available is right around 9’. Work within that limitation....See MoreJillius
