I thought the ISA arborist that I spoke to about an oak a couple years ago said that they could inject it or drench it around the trunk to treat chlorosis. I also got information from the local extension office the other day about treating chlorosis; it was in regards to a maple. We were talking about it be caused by high PH. "If the soil test indicates a high soil pH, lower the pH by applying sulfur or ammonium sulfate." It's my understand that any size tree can be treated. The conversation I had with the arborist was in reference to very large mature oak in the neighborhood that was showing signs of chlorosis, I know he said it could be treated and I thought he said it was either the injection or drenching a treatment around the tree. I've seen extensive damage to branch tips on a wide variety of trees due to squirrels. That's another possibility for you to consider. Nandina, do you remember the huge 'epidemic' of squirrel damage to the live oaks in Beaufort? Everyone (including me, probably) was convinced that it was some kind of fungal infection until Michael Murphy started investigating. It was a drought year, and the squirrels had been BUSY!!! I don't have any good ideas about the icky stuff dripping from the tree. I do not, however, think that it's from spittlebugs. I disagree with Ken that trees can withstand most anything that comes their way. Urban trees face circumstances that can set them up for failure, infestation, and infection. Such factors as compaction, street and sidewalk construction, poor soil, vehicle emissions, some street lighting, and an assortment of other 'trials and tribulations' can each (or all) take chinks out of a tree's natural armour. If these trees are valuable to you in terms of shade and/or added property value, I'd seriously consider finding a couple of ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) Certified arborists to come out for an evaluation and estimate on any needed work, if required. You might even be lucky and find that there is a well-informed certified arborist at your local extension office. That would be worth a phone call.

Yes there is a way to tell. Explaining it over the internet probably will get confusing. If you can snap a pic and email me (gregmills84@gmail.com) i will tell you. If you sand everything down and have different oak species but you stain them dark. It will not be real appearant that they are difference. The bigger difference that will be noticable will be the new floor vs old flooor. But thats not a big deal.
