Comments (16)One rose of reddish color with even less evidence of disease (although an even greater stature) is what's sold as 'Bengal Fire'. It is almost unrivaled for spotlessness *** You're right! I have a young Bengal Fire, and it is among the most disease-free roses I've ever seen. (Many red roses want to mildew here. Not Bengal Fire.) I have tried to trace its origin, and so far been unsuccessful, but if you can find it, it's a winner. Jeri...See MoreWhat is happening to my VFT soil?
Comments (3)Sorry about that, hopefully these will work: Thanks for the replies - I just checked the website and the soil is the 50/50 mix. There has always been some on the surface, it is just starting to get rust-colored bumps on it (which hopefully will show up in the picture now). I just wanted to make sure whatever was causing that wasn't going to harm my plants. Until August when I moved the plants outside, I have kept the green plant inside since I got it a year ago, due to not having a place to put it outside, and it has done fine. I thought maybe they would get more light from a lamp being on them than they are in their current spot outside....See MoreJM Laceleaf 'Red Dragon' advice please
Comments (14)Sadly, today I accidentally snapped the still malleable main apical branch back to it's bulb and managed to shear off about half of it from the bulb. All this with a light touch to more vertical: "snap". It wasn't intentional: i realized the way I had fixed to the poll was like 45 degrees, and I was trying more for 80 to 90 degreesl. I now know to leave well enough alone and I'm pretty upset with myself. I couldn't do the obvious next step, lop off this head branch. I just let it fall back to the stem. It doesn't dangle loosely or hang, but I know there is no "glue" which will magically allow phloem and xylem to nourish this most top branch and 3 stems, and that soon it will be dead. Since the tree is 4 years old, maybe it's at it's peak height anyways?. I hear these can grow to 7 to 8 feet and that would be perfect for my needs, but you can't force Mother Nature. :(...See MoreDying Red Dragon Japanese Maple
Comments (19)Just an FYI, but Superthrive is NOT a fertilizer. At best, it is a vitamin and plant hormone mixture that is supposed to reduce transplant shock and encourage root development but its actual ingredients other than B1 and NAA are not disclosed. btw, applications of vitamin B1 (thiamine) have been proven to not provide any measurable benefits to plant growth, as it is present in all soils and is manufactured by plants themselves in sufficient quantities. The debates over the benefits - if any - of Superthrive are long and heated. However there is only anecdotal reports that it provides any positive stimulus to plant growth. Scientific trials have demonstrated NO measurable benefit. And FWIW, if the tree in question is infected with VW, no amount of fertilizing with anything is going to help - fertilizer does not kill off plant pathogens....See Morehunterkiller03
