watermelon stunted growth

Brandy Curry

I have 4 watermelon vines that can barely be considered vines as they are so small, ranging from 6 to 12 in long. They have no apparent pests or fungus. They are actually very cute just tiny but they have not gotten any bigger and started fruiting watermelons about the size of my thumb. Does anyone have a clue as to why this occurs? What can I do next season to ensure the vines grow. Everything else grew just fine including cucumbers, beans, strawberries and so on.
