Is Windows Defender good for virus protection?

I just put windows 10 on my 8.1 laptop and it went well...I think! It took about an hour and a half. I seemed to have lost Kaspersky but do I really need it since Windows Defender is on it? How do I know if Windows DEfender is running? I have not been on the Internet yet as I want to be sure that I have some kind of protection and a free one sounds good. :)

    I have given up on anything else. I have AVG free on one machine and it is a huge resource hog with adware and does not seem even capable of modern threat protection. I recommend sticking with Windows Defender.
